It is totally plausible that either Westmoreland or more likely the Medal of Honor recipients told him that with his credentials (and let’s face it, skin color) he would be a shoo in to be accepted and encouraged him to apply. I believe all cadets are effectively on “full scholarship” in exchange for a military commitment, so it would not be a stretch for an 18 year old kid to see that as a full scholarship offer.

1. The colloquial term “scholarship” means some form of “you don’t have to pay full tuition”. We’re not talking a legal/economic audience here for the term, where exact terms with precise definitions are used.

2. If someone powerful/influential with suitable authority says “we’ll give you a full scholarship” to a school (or “service academy” if you’re pedantic), that’s being offered a scholarship; he just tells an underling “give this guy a full scholarship” and the underling does whatever bureaucratic steps are needed to give the guy a full scholarship. Carson “turning it down” just saved the hassle of filling out & processing paperwork and making a formal offer - just so he could fulfill the pedantic nuances of turning it down.

Ah no he didn't. You might want to read the source you are claiming vailidate your opinions about Carson.

They actually contradict your claims. From YOUR source. What is the source for the accusation? West Point says they cannot validate Politicos accusation. Seems there is NO source merely an accusation shopped to Politico.

How much you want to be Karl Rove is the “source”. This is his SOP. Plant rumore, innuendo and hearsay as “news” stories with tame journalists.

“At the end of my twelfth grade I marched at the head of the Memorial Day parade. I felt so proud, my chest bursting with ribbons and braids of every kind. To make it more wonderful, we had important visitors that day. Two soldiers who had won the Congressional Medal of Honor in Viet Nam were present. More exciting to me, General William Westmoreland (very prominent in the Viet Nam war) attended with an impressive entourage. Afterward, Sgt. Hunt introduced me to General Westmoreland, and I had dinner with him and the Congressional Medal winners. Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point. I didn¢â‚¬â„¢t refuse the scholarship outright, but I let them know that a military career wasn¢â‚¬â„¢t where I saw myself going. As overjoyed as I felt to be offered such a scholarship, I wasn¢â‚¬â„¢t really tempted. The scholarship would have obligated me to spend four years in military service after finishing college, precluding my chances to go on to medical school. I knew my direction – I wanted to be a doctor, and nothing would divert me or stand in the way. Of course the offer of a full scholarship flattered me. I was developing confidence in my abilities – just like my mother had been telling me for at least he past ten years.”

A West Point spokesman told ABC News that records from applicants who are not admitted to the school, don’t finish the full application process or are admitted but do not attend are thrown out after three years.

“Candidate files where admission/acceptance was not sought are retained for three years; therefore we cannot confirm whether anyone during that time period was nominated to West Point if they chose not to pursue completion of the application process,” the spokesman said.

“I believe that Westmoreland mentioned to Ben Carson that he could get in to West Point”

-—So you were there when Westmoreland made the offer? Wow, were you also in the Tex Book Depository when Oswald shot Kennedy?

One statement and your down in flames for anyone who has been given a military recruitment pitch. Then have it pitched By general Westmoreland too. You sure you’re not agenda driven?

It really looks like Carson has been embellishing his JR ROTC days for years. But, that is of little consequence. What people should not support him is because he’s in favor of amnesty, more gun control, has stated that his goals are the same as Al Sharpton’s, and keeps a Farrakhan supporter on his staff. Add to that he’s become a laughing stock over the pyramids of all things, has been involved with some questionable supplements company, and looks like he’s on heavy duty medication all the time.

If he had all these things against him, and was WHITE, his poll numbers would be around those of Lindsey Graham.

So, all you Carson supporters out there, get over your White Guilt, and move on.

I was verbally offered a scholarship many years ago. This is a ‘mountain out of a mole hill’.

Anyone who has served know you can trust a recruitment pitch less far than you trust a Clinton campaign promise.

But that right, YOUR unsubstantiated fact less accusation at Carson, because he “isn’t your guy” are “true” and all the real facts presents here refuting them are “nonsense”.

Yep, a NROTC scholarship isn’t the same as an appointment to one of the 4 military academies.

Aren’t West Point students offered admission without tuition in exchange for serving their country upon graduation ? So yes he could have construed that as a “scholarship” school.

One can receive an appointment to one of the military academies. Nobody is there on a "scholarship". The military also offers a lot of full ride scholarships which are essentially the same, but not to any of the 4 military academies. Most go to Norwich University, the Citadel, VMI and Texas A&M.

an appointment is not the same as a scholarship.

Man, I bet Ben Carson has a serious headache today. I have just the thing.

Seriously can't believe how many people continue to make excuses for this lying crook. I'm a Cruz guy but seriously, anyone but Carson. He's a con man and he preys on the trusting nature of Christians.
