Russia angered by Charlie Hebdo cartoons

The controversial satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo is under fire again, this time from Russia, AFP reported Friday.

According to the news agency, the Kremlin angrily condemned the magazine for publishing political cartoons on the Metrojet plane crash in the Sinai Peninsula in which 224 people died, most of them Russian tourists.

"In our country we can sum this up in a single word, sacrilege," President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

"This has nothing to do with democracy or self-expression. It is sacrilege," he added.

The Kremlin spokesman called the cartoons "unacceptable" but said Russia would not make an official complaint.

One of the cartoons shows debris and human remains raining down on an armed ISIS jihadist, with the caption: "IS: Russian aviation is intensifying bombardments," a reference to its air strikes in Syria.

Another shows a skull with a pair of sunglasses hanging off it with the crashed plane in the background.

It is titled "The dangers of Russian low-cost airlines", and the speech bubble says "I should have taken Air Cocaine," a reference to a current scandal over French pilots smuggling drugs from the Dominican Republic.

As long as Charlie Hebdo doesn’t foolishly publish cartoons making fun of Mo’ his horde, all is good.

He’s named after a dude who used to impale petty thieves and tax evaders, and posthumously was called a vampire. Lightening him up is a tall order, but if anyone’s up to it, it’s Charlie.

Yeah, Barry and Mrs. Clinton said the same thing about a YouTube video.

Lighten up, Vlad.

One can only hope you'd feel different were it an American planar - or if you had relatives on board....

Really lame.

I remember The Russians showed great sympathy to us on 9/11

hang your head.

I agree. If they did it to us we would be equally mad. Note what did not happen. The Russians did not murder the employees over it. They are using their own free expression to express appropriate outrage.

You say: "He's named after a dude who used to impale petty thieves and tax evaders, and posthumously was called a vampire"

.Actually, he was baptized with the name Vladimir after Prince Vladimir, Russian Saint.

You'd make a goof reporter for the alphabe4t channels ;)

While Charlie Hebdo is tasteless, Russia is demonstrating their lack of understanding how freedom of speech works in western countries. French government does not publish this small magazine and demanding the government to take action against it goes against how the western world works.

Putin was head of KGB in the USSR. They didn’t hold by saints. Count Vladimir “Impaler” Draco is more likely.

It’s a stupid magazine, big deal. Why worry what some foreign magazine not even affiliated with the government does.

Exactly. Since Charlie Hebdo has already announced that they will no longer publish anything derogatory about Mohamed they have pretty much lost their cutting edge satirical reputation.

I’ve never liked any black, gallows, sick humor whatever and I don’t like this, I sympathized with the guys back when the shooting happened, drawing cartoons of the prophet or some of the other things, while offensive to some, is not making fun of others misfortune. The same when they made fun of Jesus or the Trinity, I don’t appreciate it but it is nothing to kill anyone over.

Disappointed in Charlie Hebdo. Very bad thing to do but shock jocks have done just as bad of things.
