Op-ed: We need more than luck to protect us from gun violence
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | Nov 14 2015 | Rachel Borup

Last weekend I took my 9-year-old on a mother-daughter date to Fashion Place Mall. As we sat in the crowded food court enjoying an ice cream, two white men in their early 20s walked by our table, each wearing jeans, a tucked-in T-shirts and a prominently displayed gun in its holster. The men walked slowly and seemed to enjoy the fact that people in the food court were visibly alarmed by their conspicuous exhibition of weapons.

My immediate response was fear for my and my daughter's lives. We have all seen the tragedies in the news. We've heard how these incidents play out; a man calmly walks into a crowded public space with a gun and begins shooting innocent people at random. These acts of unconscionable violence are so common and numerous in the U.S. that we refer to them in shorthand by their location: Columbine, Fort Hood, Newtown, Virginia Tech, Aurora, Charleston, Isla Vista, Trolley Square.

Heart pounding, I took my daughter's hand and quickly walked away from the area fearing that today our photos would be the ones in the news, and people would say of us, "They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time." Upset at leaving her ice cream, my daughter resisted and asked where we were going. When I told her that some men in the food court had guns and it wasn't safe to stay there, her eyes got big with fear, she squeezed my hand and hastened her steps. As soon as we got out of the area, I called mall security and reported the situation.

Here is their SOP for these article:

1. Use a female for emotionalism
2. She states that she is a gun owner
3. .. and therefore is one of us
4. .. and therefore has standing on this issue
5. She is afraid of all the gun violence
5. Guns are for targets, sports, and hunting
6. The NRA and others are too extreme
7. There are many others like her
8. .. these many others need to be more vocal
9. .. and agree with her
9. We need “common sense” legislation

Strict gun control laws have worked so well in Paris and Chicago.

This time gun control will work!

Rachel Borup wouldn’t know common sense if it bit her in the butt. She is, however, adept as spewing anti-gunner talking points.

Funny - no mention of not enforcing existing laws and a President who enjoys releasing criminals from prison

Unlike Rachel here, I'd prefer seeing two "WHITE" men wearing T-shirts tucked in than a couple of Syrian "refugees" wearing "man jammies" and black masks carrying Kalashnikovs and some really sharp knives.

Sorry Rachel. You really need to try to get a grip on reality. You're losing it.

What is the point of mentioning that they were “white” men?

Liberals keep telling the same inane stories....I don’t believe for a moment this actually happened although it is absolutely possible. The sight of a gun terrifies her.

I have been seeing more articles such as this one.

SOP for left wing activists. Use a template for liberal activists to publish in local media around the country so they can then claim grassroots support.

Soros funded and approved.

two white men in their early 20s

What if it had been two law-abiding black men? Would she run then, or would that be 'racist'?

All the shootings that Rachel listed were in gun-free zones.

And remember, Paris is a gun-free zone.

An objective study of gun violence informs a sound mind, that gun-free zones are potentially dangerous, while locations where guns are permitted are statistically safer.

I think that this twit forgot the terror attack at Trolley SQ years ago. If those men had been there with their evil weapons I think the result would have been different.

She would not, of course, fear black men carrying guns openly. She is attempting to initiate a racial stereotype that is contrary to fact.

If she loved her daughter she would teach her about guns, how to handle guns. The people who mean harm don’t flash them around. The ones flashing them around are the ones protecting her sorry ass. Her daughter will just grow up to be another neurotic woman, incapable of taking care of herself, but it won’t matter because by then we’ll all be under Sharia Law and I don’t say that in any joking manner.
