French officials recently declared that that country would stop using any of those names and instead refer to the group as âDaesh.â
Whether referred to as ISIS, ISIL, or IS, all three names reflect aspirations that the United States and its allies unequivocally reject. Political and religious leaders all over the world have noted this. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said, âThis is a terrorist group and not a state. . . the term Islamic State blurs the lines between Islam, Muslims, and Islamists.â
The term âDaeshâ is strategically a better choice because it is still accurate in that it spells out the acronym of the groupâs full Arabic name, al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham. Yet, at the same time, âDaeshâ can also be understood as a play on words â and an insult. Depending on how it is conjugated in Arabic, it can mean anything from âto trample down and crushâ to âa bigot who imposes his view on others.â Already, the group has reportedly threatened to cut out the tongues of anyone who uses the term.
Why do they care so much? The same reason the United States should. Language matters.

How about calling them savages.
Works for me.
.
“Islamic State” makes the connection with Islam clear to English speakers. “Daesh” does not. I suspect that this proposed switch is a politically correct move designed to blur the association of terrorists with Islam.
Admittedly ISIS doesn’t represent all of Islam (that’s clear from the opposition within Islam itself). It’s one Muslim group’s conception of an Islamic state, though, one that’s attracting enough followers to pose a serious threat. That group thinks the connection is close enough to use the name, and English speakers need to be aware of it (including low information voters). It’s unwise to suppress that information by using a term that doesn’t convey it to English speakers. Words do matter.
I believe that I must speak out against Islam and not the people who are Moslems. There is a difference in loathing Islam as an erroneous doctrine and the people who practice it. Islam is a twisted idealogy. Moslems are only misguided people, slaves to a violent form of authoritarianism.
Islam is no religion. It must be banned in America as it was banned in Angola! And all mosques closed in America as they were in Angola. Then Moslems who live in America can live in freedom & peace or move to a country where Islam is legal.

I don’t understand the use of Daesh as opposed to ISIS, though I’m not familiar with Arabic insults, the word Daesh is an Acronym, just like ISIS.
It means Dawlat al Islam fi Iraq wa Sham, if I remember correctly. which means...Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.
Mispronouncing their name as a way to hurt them seems completely pointless and childish, I think a few heavy bombers would send the message that everyone is upset with them much more clearly, and in terms they understand.
Sounds like DESH...The Democrat Engineered Socialist Holocaust.
“J Fân Kerry calls them Daesh. I think he thinks it makes him sound smart...”
Has he compared them to Gheghis Khan yet?
Actually at the G20 he was using it.
Interesting that the thesis of this article is that the acronym matters and Obama has always used ISIL instead of ISIS. ISIS = Islamic State of Iraq and Syria while ISIL = Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel). So Obama has consistently chosen to use the term which is much more expansive for ISIS for whatever reason.
Levant includes Israel
Yeah, I included Israel.
No wonder O’Venal calls them ISIL! His wish is that they win.
Cute. It’s like, this time, the libs are letting us in on their little trick to call people names and control the vocabulary. Surprised they don’t want to call them tea baggers.
I start to get suspicious anytime I accidentally find myself on the same side of an argument as a ‘Rat. So, I think I’ll hold off for a while.
DA-esh, 2 syllables
Obama calls them ISIL in order to signal his SUPPORT for the destruction of Israel and the murder of all Jews.
Eh, I’ll stick with “ISIS”.

Some have poor reasons for using “Daesh”. And it’s a queer looking term that’s pronunciation isn’t apparent.
It does begin to sound like a diversionary sideshow, doesn't it? Except that I think the origin was someone who really doesn't like ISIS scumbags.
We still need a fresh name, to reflect Obama's membership. Since he was _Resident of the United States already when they formed up, that makes him a charter member.
“blurs the line between Islam, Moslems and Islamists” — Islamists are followers of Islam. Bad Moslems don’t follow islam’s injunction to kill kafirs
Sticks and stones. . .
DON"T call them DAESH!!!!!
“Daesh” is an Arabic acryonym for “Al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi Iraq wa al-Sham”, the full name of the group that calls itself the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or Isis. The acronym is favoured by mainstream Muslims, who say the term “Islamic State” gives a religious dignity to what is simply a terrorist sect.
“Daesh” also sounds similar to the Arabic phrase “Dahes” - or “one who sows discord” - and as such is regarded as highly insulting by Isis followers. In July, a group of 120 British MPs wrote to Lord Hall, the director-general of the BBC, urging him to instruct his staff to use “Daesh” as well. Lord Hall said that would break BBC impartiality rules by giving viewers the impression that the BBC was explicitly supporting the group’s opponents.
how about F-—ing Daesh ?
God damned dune c—ns with AK’s
Kill um all and let Satan sort them out
