Bromance on the Rocks: Surging Ted Cruz Begins to Poke Donald Trump

Ted Cruz's moment has arrived.

Less than 10 weeks before Iowa voters their cast the first votes of the presidential campaign season in Feb. 1 caucuses, a new Quinnipiac poll shows the Texas senator statistically tied with Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump for the lead in the state. Perhaps not so coincidentally, Cruz is tentatively beginning to take on the brash New York billionaire after months of cozying up.

Twice in recent days, the Texan has seized opportunities to distance himself from Trump's policies and rhetoric. First, Cruz disagreed with Trump after the New Yorker expressed openness to setting up a registry of Muslim Americans in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks. "I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's but I'm not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters in Iowa, according to Politico. "The First Amendment protects religious liberty, I've spent the past several decades defending religious liberty."

Then over the weekend, he politely chided inflammatory rhetoric from fellow Republicans on immigration, when asked about Trump during an interview with the Associated Press. "Tone matters," Cruz said. "Are there some in the Republican Party whose rhetoric is unhelpful with regard to immigration? Yes." Cruz's campaign said to expect more distinctions to come.

"Hateful" tone?

A "tone" can be meek, belligerent, passive, bellicose, sweet, mellifluous, and such; however, "hateful" it can not be. And people who complain about Trump's "tone" need to seek help for their abject lack of a decent vocabulary, as well as for their delusional state!

Trump was talking about the horde of Muslim "Syrians" ( LOL) that Obama wants to take in and those he has already taken in. Many have been sneaking into the USA at our Southern border, for a while now.

The Boston Bomber brothers were taken in as "refugees". Gee.....that turned out so we,ll, didn't it!

I doubt that anyone now supporting Trump finds his latest comments "hateful".

>>Cruz has taken more arrows fighting for our conservative views than any other statesman currently alive. He has the battle scars to show that he is on our side. I hate that people are willing to attack the character of a champion to try to support a carnival barker who was buddy buddy with the Clintons just a few short years ago.

I don’t have confidence that Cruz is for real and not an act. Many believed Bush2 was conservative and that was an act. We don’t know if Trump is for real either. There is just too much wheeling and dealing and corruption for me to feel sure about either one of them. But Rove and the rest of the political scum’s reaction to Trump makes me suspect thatTrump is for real. His positions are documented in his earlier published books. He may well be the only one tough enough who can take on the evil and at the same time build consensus, clean up and clean out. Then again, he may just be the Clinton’s Perot ticket to the WH, but I don’t see that. I see a man who is just so fed up with America’s direction that he is willing to give up his nice life/money to try to help right a sinking ship, aka, his country that he loves. In any case, calling him a Carnival Barker seems undignified in its “tone”.

Every conservative Senator (with the notable exception of Tom Cotton) including Senators Lee, Sessions, and Cruz ultimately voted for the Corker bill.

Senator Cruz’s reason for voting for it was that it would require President Obama to bring his agreement before congress rather than simply ignoring congress and doing it all at the UN which he was threatening to do.

Obviously a far better solution would have been for congress to simply impeach Obama if he didn’t present it for approval as a treaty. However, that was never going to happen with Boehner and McConnell as the Republican leadership. So, after their amendments were defeated and they were unable to prevent cloture from being reached, the conservative Senators ultimately decided to vote for it since it would at least delay Obama’s being able to get rid of the sanctions on Iran.

Cruz is the best by far.

His resume is impressive. He has proven legal and legislative experience and as a top debater he can think on his feet and doesn’t make embarrassing slips.

He will represent us well as the candidate.

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

Mine flashed a bit early. I would hope you understand.

Donald Trump is capable of going “inside the beltway” on a moments notice. It isn’t part of the plan.

A Man that can make 10 billion dollars on his own is quite a force. The powers that be are happy with it.

Ssshh.

I would be upset to learn there was a database for Christians.

But you wouldn't be surprised would you? The military used to keep track of your religious preference and tax records reveal donations along with census questions that they are not supposed to ask.

Rush has quoted the Federal law that requires religion must be considered when a person is seeking refugee status.

I don’t know what they believe, but the media would assuredly make “hay” out of the seeming hypocrisy of it. Trump is unpredictable. I think he picks a young, sharp, non-politician who shares his views and talents. This way he can most help America by extending for more years the recovery he says he will bring.

Cruz is the guy swimming the moat with a knife in his teeth. He knows how to fight.
Is that the same Cruz that was manhandled by a Huckabee thug?...I thought so.

Did he, or did he not use the word "TONE" ?

That is a now all too familiar code for an impugnation on Trump.

Once Cruz is done packing the Supreme Court with pro-life, pro-marriage constitutional originalists, restoring our military’s power and prominence and rules of engagement, dismantling the domestic police state, repealing Obamacare, closing down all the federal departments of BS, creating a flat tax and balancing the budget, I’d tell him to go ahead and give whoever donated to his campaign a 0% tax as a reward. It will be well worth the trade-off if it takes that to get him into office.

It is confusing but I have added a link which explains both.

You have posted an alibi that is so convoluted some people actually believe it.

If Trump starts hitting Cruz on his corker bill and TPA votes, and then ties them to CoC and CFG donations, Cruz is toast nationally
Not to mention his Koch habit.

And the Census, as well as the stupid extra census stuff.
I see NOTHING at all “wrong” nor “unConstitutional” about a data base on all of the supposed “SYRIANS”.

They did not follow what the Corker bill said. It said that all side deals had to be revealed. They weren’t and the Dems and Liberal Republicans ignored it.

You refuse to inform yourself on the TPA/TPP issue so you will think what you wish.

It’s very strange. As a Cruz supporter, I appreciate Trump and, in fact, voted for him as TIME Person of the Year due to the impact he has had on this election cycle. I will vote for him if he is the candidate, even though he is not my first choice.

Some Trump supporters do not have a second choice. It’s Trump or they become irrational. The vicious response to anything that is even slightly critical or contrary to Trump is, frankly, scary.
