The Turkish military has released an audio recording of what it says were warnings to a Russian warplane before it was shot down on the Syrian border.

"Change your heading south immediately," a voice says in English. Turkey said it had tried to rescue the SU-24 bomber's two pilots.

The planes were warned 10 times over the space of five minutes via an "emergency" channel and asked to change direction, he added.

Both planes disregarded the warnings and then flew 2.19km (1.36 miles) and 1.85km (1.15 miles) into Turkey for 17 seconds from 09:24:05 (07:24:05 GMT), according to Mr Cevik.

So the warnings were every 30 seconds but the plane was only in Turkish airspace for 17 seconds (if you believe Turkey's version of events). What's wrong with this math.

The Syrian Army has no presence in what is in effect a lawless area where Syria is not exercising its de jure sovereignty.

It's OK to invade Syria because Syria has been destabilized by the White House, that about it?

Turkey is making a boatload of money from selling ISIS oil. I think they will do everything possible to stop Russia from bombing the hell out of the refinerys and oil trucks. Retaliation, possible.

were ordered to disregard warnings

That would be my guess. The pilots were ordered by their Russian commanders to disregard the warnings. This way Putin can claim to have an excuse for an aggressive response. This seems to be the Russians' normal way of doing things.

“Totally implausible.”

There is nothing the least bit implausible about that. Turkey has been conducting air and ground military operations into Syria for decades under the authority of the Charter of the United Nations and its authorization to use military force against another sovereign nation and its territory in self defense. This condition for authority has been satisfied throughout the past decades by the continuing infiltration of hostile and heavily armed guerilla forces from Syria. The Syrian government can protest and conduct armed opposition against the Turkish military operations making incursions into Syria for the purpose of defending Turkey’s borders, but Syria remains the aggressor subject to such defensive actions by Turkey until such time as Syria secures its own borders, stops sponsoring and/or suppresses armed guerilla operations making incursions into Turkey from Syrian territories, and normalizes bi-lateral diplomatic and military relations with Turkey.

“pan-pan” is also a distress communication. May-Day used more for life threatening situations and pan-pan used more for serious aircraft failure, becoming lost or any other situation that requires communication and assistance from the ground.

“that about it?”

No, that is nowhere near to being “about it.”

The Syrian government has been supporting armed incursions into Turkey for decades. Under international law, especially the U.N. Charter, Turkey has a lawful right to defend itself with armed force. This authorized use of armed force includes incursions or invasions into the aggressors territory for the purpose of abating the aggression and restoring peace and security. It makes no difference whether or not the Syrian Army or illegal combatants are in control of the Syrian territory, Turkey has a lawful right to take action to conduct military operations against the hostile forces operating in Syrian territories.

So the recording comes out two days after the fact? Yea, right. I have trouble with both of them. The Russians apparently may have flown over a small finger of land but IMHO, Turkey was just looking for a reason.

Why was the recording not released immediately, or did it take them two days to goad the donkey to get them to wherever the recording was made?

And the Turks are as clean as the wind driven snow. Just ask the Kurds or anyone in that region about that. Erdegon is a bad actor as they use our aid dollars not to go after anyone in that region except for the Kurds, who are supposed to be our allies in the fight against ISIS.

“The warning does not say they are in their airspace.”

The warning was so the SU-24 would turn back before entering Turkish airspace - which is a no-fly zone from Syria.

“And the Russian pilots understood English? And they knew that how?”

English is the international language in general, and of aviation in particular. All international air traffic control is conducted in English, and pilots had better be conversant in it.

“Turkey was just looking for a reason.”

You’ve got it backwards. A few years ago the Russians used their naval warship’s air defense missiles located in a Syrian harbor to shoot down a Turkish F-4 Phantom that was patrolling against Syrian warplanes making incursions into Turkish airspace. The Russian kill of the Turkish F-4 was in retaliation for Turkey’s success in shooting down two Syrian fighter aircraft making incursions into Turkish airspace. Russia has been making frequent and deliberate incursions into Turkish airspace along much of Turkey’s borders for more than a month now in this year in what is evidently an effort by Putin to put pressure on Turkey and the NATO alliance. In other words Putin and Russia have been probing the Turkish air defenses since before October 2015 in an effort to provoke a confrontation with NATO. This confrontation is being used by Putin to distract attention away from Putin’s shutting off of natural gas supplies by Gazprom the Ukraine. These moves are just the prelude to Russia resuming offensive combat operations against further Ukrainian territories.

My understanding is pan-pan call means distress but not an immediate life threatening emergency. Sort of a “Houston, we have a problem” kind of message. Mayday implies the s#!+ has fully impacted the fan.

Your explanation has nothing to do with this situation.

Defensive actions against Syrians doesn’t give them the right to chase the Russians back across the border.

17 seconds, in transit, across an uneven border.

Using Falcons and Sidewinders.

What I want to know is ... did Turkey inform NATO and/or the WH prior to this action of their concerns over the border flights of the Russians? And what advice was given?

Actually, to be certified as an international airport by ICAO, the tower must have controllers fluent in both English and French. (When flying into Logan, Air France pilots wisely choose to communicate in English, Air Quebec insist on French.)

Is there any other audio with an “answer” or recording of “we are going to shoot you down”?

Thanks
