I like the .45, but prefer the 125 grain .357 magnum rd. Good ballistics and proven man stopper. The only downside is it is hell on K frame S&W revolvers.
<< When it comes to handguns, in the end it is all about placement - Practice, Practice, Practice! >>
Exactly! Too many treat ammo like it’s some kind of talisman to compensate for not hitting your target. It’s better to use a puny caliber and place all the shots where they should be than to carry around a large hand cannon that you can’t shoot for sh*t.
I volunteer as a line safety officer at a local county run range. The bottom of the target frame is where most guys are hitting. If they do hit the target it looks like they were using a shotgun.
I use a Ruger 77/44 44 Mag Rifle for deer. The 210 gr HP Sierra @1850 fps will flat stomp them!
I do have a Ruger SP-101 in .357. But after some testing with a chronograph I found that using .357 in a snub revolver doesn’t give the additional velocity. It does give a big ball of flame which tells me I’m just wasting powder.
So when I carry that piece I load it with .38 Spl in +P. Less recoil and less fireball. And it’s still a darned effective round. The Hornady Critical Defense load is pretty darned accurate considering the barrel length.

No one, I mean NO ONE ... walks away after I pull the trigger.
I concur. .357 mag in a snubnose is just a bit too hot for me. It’s about as pleasant as a root canal w/o anesthesia. And between the muzzle flash and recoil you damn well better have a tight grip. My cousin learned that lesson the hard way. I think it took a couple of months before his eyebrows grew back to something semi-normal looking.
Try Hornaday critical duty or critical defense. They have a plastic tip in the hollow point that helps it feed, even in steep ramps that concealed carry pistols often have.
I have two 45acp’s. Glock G30, 10 rounds and a Colt Series 80, 7+1. My snl has a 1911 plus the G36.
The 44 Mag shot out of a 18 1/2” barrel gives new meaning to FU-ed up!
I like the Ruger LCR in .38 SP +P. .38 special was good enough for decades. Revolvers seldom have a failure to feed, the ammo is cheap, the weapon is easy to shoot and it is built for use with a laser sight.
Admittedly, you only get five shots... So Glazers or JHPs are what go into it.
10mm works. Fedgov girls and/or limpwrists couldnt handle the guns and kick so they reduced the standards to the 40 cal.
No mention of hydra-shocks. Segmented head with a steel center post.
Be aware that selection bias may be a factor in these statistics. If the people who carry .45 ACP (or a particular load such as its Rem 185gr Golden Saber at 96%) are steely-eyed killers, or tend to work for an agency that emphasizes firearms proficiency, that caliber may have better stats than the .45 ACP Rem 230gr FMJ at a mere 62%. Explanations other than caliber/load include shot placement, training, proficiency, or even the situations in which its users choose to shoot.
Still, I’ll go with the .45 ACP over the .38 special, and with a load that reliably stops the threat over a load with under 50% success, because these results look plausible and well researched.
I carry one of two .357s, a Ruger SP101 3”-5 with Hornaday Custom 125gr JHP/XTP or a S&W 686 6”-6 with Hornaday Custom 158gr JHP/XTP. Both have oversized checkered wood combat grips.
a fair point for sure but magazine capacity has to be considered as well and considering the improvements in JHP design and performance, the advantage that the .45 JHP holds over the 9mm is questionable. That being said, I consider the 10mm superior to both rounds as you get a .40” projectile with .41 magnum terminal energy levels and 16 rounds vs 14 of .45 acp. From the Glock platform, it’s just right for self defense IMO.
Me, too. The double stack Glock’s grip was just too big for me, but I wanted more capacity than a single stack. I got a XD-45 and really like it.
Taurus PT111 Millennium G2. 9MM 12 + 1.
The first mag I ran through it I was shooting low but with a good grouping. On only the 2nd mag, I put all 12 in the 10 ring!
Ran 150 rounds of FMJ and 12 rounds of HP's through her without a single hiccup.
Very happy with this purchase. After the mail in rebate, my net cost will only be $222.00. More importantly, I can shoot pretty decently with it.
