Why rooftop solar advocates are upset about California's clean-energy law

California's aggressive push to increase renewable energy production comes with a catch for people with solar panels on the roof: You don't count.

If a home or business has a rooftop solar system, most of the wattage isn't included in the ambitious requirement to generate half of the state's electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind by 2030, part of legislation signed in October by Gov. Jerry Brown.

That means rooftop solar owners are missing out on a potentially lucrative subsidy that is paid to utilities and developers of big power projects.

It also means that utility ratepayers could end up overpaying for clean electricity to meet the state's benchmark because lawmakers, by excluding rooftop solar, left out the source of more than a third of the state's solar power.

Owners of rooftop solar systems and their advocates aren't happy about the policy.

It doesn’t matter to a true Greenie, does it?

After all, the true Greenies are motivated by love for Earth Mother Goddess Gaia, not by filthy government money and rebate coupons.

You mean they thought it was actually about "clean energy" and not funneling tax money to certain groups?

Silly Californians.

Your average California-voter was all for this crap, because they thought they would be getting subsidizes and money from the government and their electric companies.

But, in typical California style, only the big-wig politicians and companies get the kickbacks, and your average idiot California-voter will forget that they got screwed by those same politicians and companies when it comes time to vote again!

They fall for this crap, over and over!

Sad truth about PV solar cells: Any PV solar panel that is in line of sight of a nuclear EMP explosion will instantly and totally be destroyed due to the voltage it will induce across the semiconductor junction.

I'll take those chances....about the same chances as a dinosaur stepping on my car.

Natch! Because those systems are simply too small to significantly harm wildlife and the eco system, and more importantly siphon dollars back into the pockets of demonrats. Why oh why couldn't Californians remembered the simple axiom "If It's brown, Flush It Down"!

Let me guess — they’re mad because they can’t get some gov’t entity to pay them for ‘free electricity’? If it’s free, why don’t they just supply the grid at no charge, for the benefit of everyone?
