Cary's Greg Brannon files for U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Richard Burr

Cary Republican Greg Brannon announced Monday that he is filing papers with the State Board of Elections to run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by two-term incumbent Richard Burr, a Winston-Salem Republican.

Brannon's campaign describes him as an anti-establishment candidate.

Brannon, an obstetrician, said in a news release that "politicians love to use words like 'the Constitution' or 'conservative' during election season to distract us from the truth. And the truth is, Richard Burr is part of the House of Cards Washington Cartel."

This is not Brannon’s first run for U.S. Senate.

In 2014, he ran unsuccessfully in the GOP primary against Charlotte pastor Mark Harris and then-state House Speaker Thom Tillis, who went on to win in the general election against then-incumbent Kay Hagan.

Good news. I thought Brannon did pretty well last time. Even if he doesn’t have much of a chance against Burr, Brannon is doing us a favor by being willing to challenge the guy. These Republicrats should not get a bye.

That’s what’s always said if a conservative is nominated.

But it’s quite possible you’re right. It was a very tight race.

Nevertheless, Tillis has proved to be a Mitch minion. And Burr is a male Elizabeth Dole.

Time to go, Dick!

Unlike some I can separate ideology and electibilty. He was a clueless neophyte candidate and that’s why he would have lost, not cause he was conservative.

I Would be happy to see someone more conservative than Burr—such as Congressman Patrick McHenry—run against him in the primary, so long as such challenger wouldn’t cough up the seat to a liberal Democrat in the general election. Greg Brannon does not inspire confidence in me that he would beat the Democrat in the general. And, frankly, all that we have to base Brannon’s conservative bona fides is his say so. Why people with no record on which to stand keep insisting on running for the U.S. Senate instead of for a lower office is beyond me.

I’d be far more willing to take a fly on Brannon if he ran against Congresswoman Renee Ellmers in NC-02 instead. Ellmers has been more disappointing than Burr, her district (which includes part of Cary) is more Republican than is the state as a whole (so it would be more difficult for Brannon to blow the general election), and, if Brannon ends up being a disappointment (or if he somehow loses the general), there will be a new election two years later to remedy the mistake. so why does Brannon insist that the U.S. Senate is the only office in NC worth seeking?

If the person isn’t a conservative...does it really matter if they are the Dem or GOP flavor?

Not me. Screw the GOP traitors who pretend to be something they are not.

No, Brannon is the only substantive challenger to Burr.

Obamacare was passed 60-40 in a Senate with 60 democrats, so obviously, yes, it does matter.

No, McHenry is running for reelection to the House, not for the Senate. I mentioned him as an example of someone with a proven conservative record with the political and electoral skills to be able to win a U.S. Senate race in NC.

Yeah....lets keep voting for folks like Thad Cochran, Mitch McConnell, and Paul Ryan. They are fighting the good fight for conservatives!

No thanks. I am a conservative. I don’t support liberal slimy turds...especially not ones who pretend to be conservative around election time.

The GOP can get bent. They despise conservatives more than they despise Democrats.

Your reply doesn’t refute the point I made.

I think your point is that you will vote for anyone with an R behind regardless of whether or not they are a conservative.

You asked me if it mattered whether Republicans were in office rather than democrats. I gave an example that proved it does.

If someone more conservative than Burr that can beat him and the rat runs for the Senate, I’d support them. Brannon is not that guy and was not that guy in 2014 against Tillis. His campaign last time would have been gangbusters if the electorate was comprised entirely of freepers, but it’s wasn’t and it’s still not. We need strong candidates like Chris McDaniel in MS, who was only beaten with democrat votes, or Joe Carr in TN (who sadly didn’t get attention from so-called conservative leaders who were busy backing less worthy challengers like random doctors in Kansas) to have any hope of beating an incumbent Senator in the primary.

If Burr is renominated I will 100% support him over whatever faggot the communists put up who would vote for a 1000 terrible things that Burr never would, (God forbid) Hillary Supreme Court nominees for instance.

Complain that he’s not good enough all you like, he’s not, few are, but don’t tell me it makes no difference. Tell it to yourself if you like to justify it to your own conscience when you leave the ballot blank in November, but don’t tell it to me.

I find it hard to believe on average Burr has a worse conservative record than Tillis, but there it is. Either one of them would be comfortable representing Maine or Illinois. It's great Brannon has entered the race.

I miss Jesse Helms, but I'll take Greg Brannon for sure...

What the GOP done to repeal or inhibit Obamacare? Aside from show votes, they have done nothing. I’m glad you are happy with GOP. In my mind they and the Dems are one in the same.

You continue to ignore the point. The dems passed it and I shudder to think what horror they’ll pass the next time they have such a number of congressional seats. Believe what you will but you better not complain to me when they ban guns or pass single payer.

My point is they are the same. You are being fooled by show votes.

What has the GOP seriously done to repeal Obamacare or stop Obama’s agenda? Was it the budget they passed last week?

There is little point in having the GOP in power. They have done nothing to deserve it.
