I Would be happy to see someone more conservative than Burr—such as Congressman Patrick McHenry—run against him in the primary, so long as such challenger wouldn’t cough up the seat to a liberal Democrat in the general election. Greg Brannon does not inspire confidence in me that he would beat the Democrat in the general. And, frankly, all that we have to base Brannon’s conservative bona fides is his say so. Why people with no record on which to stand keep insisting on running for the U.S. Senate instead of for a lower office is beyond me.
I’d be far more willing to take a fly on Brannon if he ran against Congresswoman Renee Ellmers in NC-02 instead. Ellmers has been more disappointing than Burr, her district (which includes part of Cary) is more Republican than is the state as a whole (so it would be more difficult for Brannon to blow the general election), and, if Brannon ends up being a disappointment (or if he somehow loses the general), there will be a new election two years later to remedy the mistake. so why does Brannon insist that the U.S. Senate is the only office in NC worth seeking?
Is McHenry running?
