N. Korea says it conducts successful powerful H-bomb test

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea said Wednesday it had conducted a hydrogen bomb test, a defiant and surprising move that, if confirmed, would put Pyongyang a big step closer toward improving its still-limited nuclear arsenal.

A television anchor read a typically propaganda-heavy statement on state TV that said North Korea had tested a "miniaturized" hydrogen bomb, elevating the country's "nuclear might to the next level" and providing it with a weapon to defend against the United States and its other enemies.

The statement said the test was a "perfect success."

The test, if confirmed by outside experts, will lead to a strong push for new, tougher sanctions at the United Nations and further worsen already abysmal relations between Pyongyang and its neighbors.

North Korean nuclear tests worry Washington and others because each new blast is seen as pushing North Korea's scientists and engineers closer to their goal of an arsenal of nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the United States.

Largest Fission weapon was 700kt detonated by England.
Very dangerous weapon as it had around 6x critical mass.
Just assembling it could have caused a blue flash.

Largest detonated by USA was 500kt

Got to work on that program as a college intern with some software testing. It’s why I can technically claim to be a rocket scientist. :)

The britts were trying to develop a high yield H-bomb and first couple failed.
As a backup they built their 700k Fission weapon and claimed it was a successful H-bomb.
Its unclear if it was Tritium boosted but for sure it used lots of U235

...and providing it with a weapon to defend against the United States and its other enemies.

Well countries that have given up WMD seem to get invaded - Iraq, Libya and Ukraine come to mind.

Nice idea, but our Pershing IIs were eliminated under the INF Treaty.

It could have been a dud H-bomb - a fission trigger explosion that failed to produce the fusion explosion.

I'm wondering if the NORK scientists told Dear Leader that it was a successful H-bomb even though it failed. I mean, how would he know if it was successful or not. They might have had to lie to save their hides.

Because no other Republican candidate was aware of North Korea’s threat until Donald Trump told them.

Getting real would be a great start for you.

No, they were aware but bought into the idiotic notion that North Korea was no longer a serious threat and hence not worthy of discussion. Funny how someone with NO governing experience and accused of being retarded on foreign policy had the foresight on North Korea......As for ‘getting real’, I just pointed out a FACT regarding that 2nd debate. What the hell is your problem???

Meanwhile, no reporter is the least bit curious why the NKOR govt paid Bill Clinton $500K for a speech when Hillary was secretary of state. These people resort to eating tree bark in the winter and they somehow found couch cushion money to here Bill drone on for an hour. Looks like it was worth the money.

But the WH said they did not believe N Korea had an H-bomb or nuke.

From 12/10/2015
In Washington, the White House said it was doubtful that North Korea had developed ahydrogen bomb, but said Pyongyang remained a threat.

“At this point, the information that we have access to calls into serious question those claims, but we take very seriously the risk and the threat that is posed by the North Korean regime in their ambitions to develop a nuclear weapon,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told a regular briefing.

Posted at a Reuters outlet - Grand Forks Herald.

Time for a strongly worded letter or maybe a EO telling them to stop to solve the problem, right after another family vacation and a few rounds of golf.

Could be. I’ve heard he’s fed some of his kinfolk to dogs for a far less infraction than a nuclear failure...

We need Star wars— don’t we and we need to nuke up and upgrade our delivery systems and get rid of the naive “head in the sand” crap.

To #11. Didn’t Cary Grant once say “Juche, Juche, Juche” in a movie?

And wasn’t there a song “Juche Blue Eyes”?

You want fried lice with that?
