Iowa governor Branstad knocks Cruz on Canadian birth

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) said Monday that the birthplace of Sen. Ted Cruz is "fair game," adding to a growing chorus questioning whether the Texas Republican's Canadian birth could affect his ability to secure the GOP presidential nomination.

"When you run for president of the United States, any question is fair game. So let the people decide," Branstad told reporters Monday.

Cruz, speaking to reporters in Baton Rouge, La., noted that Branstad's son has thrown his support elsewhere, hosting fundraisers for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Branstad’s son is big in the Renewable Fuel Industry. Cruz supports phasing out ethanol mandates.

“If Cruz is declared to be ineligible by the USSC then so be it”

I don’t want to take that chance. Too much is at stake. the 2000 election struggle was bad enough.

Trump tried to warn Cruz that this would happen. Cruz just laughed it off.

Still running with a false narrative. There is nothing that Cruz could have done to get the court to define the term prior to a case being filled. The chance was avoided by the court when they ducked the question with Obama. You seem to be willfully blinded by your worship of Trump.

Nor will the attitudes expressed by the Cruz fans on FR who do persuade anyone to their way of thinking.

How would you tell a Harvard law schooled lawyer he is not eligible to hold the office of president? This is of Cruz’ s own doing...

Trump has spent less than 10% of what Ted has.

He has business acumen.

Has Cruz filed in all 50 states or does that happen after the nomination? If a state were to refuse his filing, he would then have standing to sue.

We already have elected a bunch of big government liberals to Congress. They’re called Republicans.

Ted Cruz should start considering a graceful exit strategy. The only thing is it’s awkward timing. I would suggest he secretly reach out to the Don and diffuse this in a way that’s favorable to both. VP is out, Cruz would be a bad pick and it will short shrift his career.

I would rather see him as Senate Majority leader and the go to Senator for Trumps Judicial nominees. I don’t know if the Don as POTUS has much pull on who’s the Senate Majority leader but he can include him in a shadow cabinet built from both the house and senate to help Trump negotiate the treacherous paths in Congress.

The term is defined... This is not a definition problem... This is not unsettled, but leave it to a Harvard law school graduate to make it appear to be.

Cruz wasn't born on the soil of the United States and his father wasn't born on the soil of the United States...he's not eligible in my book.

I agree, we should not take chances. That is why there is no way that I will support a life-long liberal with a nasty disposition and a long history of broken vows, 5 party changes - 4 bankruptcies & 3 marriages, even if he is really really rich...

People sure don’t stick up for Cruz.

I'm afraid that the reputation Cruz earned... of not being particularly well liked by his colleagues... which some initially took on as a badge of honor... is coming back to haunt him.

There are times when you need political allies, and this is one of those times for Cruz.

I suspect this would be playing out differently if it were Jeff Sessions on the hotseat. He's every bit as conservative as Cruz, but I've heard that he is admired by most of the Senate, even the dimocrats don't actively dislike him personally.

What ever happened to the story that Cruz's mother had voted in elections in Canada?

Did that peter out? A non-issue?

Don’t you remember when Branstad spoke out about candidate Barack Obama’s questionable citizenship and lack of authentic identification documents?

ME NEITHER.

OUCH. This is going to hurt Ted. Remember the GOPe strategy is to destroy Trump, but also to stop Ted and convince him to endorse Jeb. All GOPe roads lead to Jeb. BOTH Donald and Ted must be stopped...but in different ways. I am hearing that Jeb/Coc/GOPe is planning to hit Trump HARD before S.C. and have that be his “Waterloo”.

“and at the same time deny that “anchor babies” are “natural born citizens.””

Are the ‘anchor babies’ parents citizens?

I’m sorry your guy wasn’t born in the US and would, in your words, lead to the USSC deciding who would be President.

You can spew Trump hate all you want, but he has seized the issues while Cruz was giving out soccerballs and teddy bears to parasites that get offended when you ask them to speak English.
