Trump calls for higher ethanol mandate
The Hill ^ | 1/19/2016 | Timothy Kama

Donald Trump said Tuesday that federal regulators should increase the amount of ethanol blended into the nation’s gasoline supply.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, Trump, a real estate mogul and the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, said the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ought to follow the ethanol volumes Congress set in 2007.

“The EPA should ensure that biofuel ... blend levels match the statutory level set by Congress under the [renewable fuel standard],” Trump said. The mandate is popular in Iowa, which hosts the nation's first caucuses.

This “my candidate’s d&@ck is bigger than your candidate’s” is embarrassing.

It's much worse than that. It's more like "My candidate can steal more money from the citizens than yours can."

Despicable.

The low information mouth breathers have picked their candidate. It's all over but for the voting.

Wow. My first disagreement with the man.

That is because we are in the primary season and we are talking about a man with no principals.

Just wait. You'll find more to disagree about once the general starts.

He went on to say that energy independence for America is key to making America great again, and that anything that assists American energy independence is a good idea.

OPEC and trillion dollar wars OR ethanol and 6 billion in tax write-offs?

Which is cheaper?

With all due respect, Chaplain, that is a false dichotomy.

I appreciate the willingness to engage in fair debate.

But that IS what Trump is saying.

Now, as to whether it’s a fair way of looking at ethanol, it really should be viewed in light of his total remarks that he wants American energy independence.

What is that worth considering how many trillions in our defense budget have been focused on the Middle East over the last 50 years?

So, I actually consider it to be an astute observation on his part. He’ll encourage fracking, wildcatting, drilling, brewing, etc. ANYTHING that produces energy.

And we all know that those industries ALSO get tax breaks.

And that’s all the ethanol subsidy is: a tax break for refiners. It’s not even for farmers. They benefit from greater competition for their corn.

It’s not the tax breaks that are troublesome, as much as the mandate: FORCING AT THE POINT OF A GUN (that’s what laws are, after all) that we MUST use ethanol in our vehicles.

That does not foster market driven energy independence. Just the opposite, in fact. It creates artificial demand.

And what Trump vocally supported here — and Cruz opposes — is an upcoming increase in the percentage of ethanol in the blend that the EPA has mandated must occur.

And it’s not done in the name of reducing our dependence on foreign oil. It’s done in the name of the pagan earth worship called “climate change”.

Support for free market ethanol is a conservative position. Support for mandated ethanol is anything but.

While you may applaud Trump for desiring to reduce our dependence on OPEC and prevent war in the Mideast, and I’m sure you really believe that in your heart — the Occam’s Razor explanation for Trump’s position is that he is simply pandering to voters in the #1 state that benefits from ethanol production.

And for the record — I live in an “oil state”, and I am very much AGAINST subsidies to the oil industry.

Ted Cruz has also gone on record opposing ALL energy subsidies — not just ethanol.

That, my FRiend, is a CONSERVATIVE position!

FRegards

I’m going to disagree, NT, because national security IS a conservative position.

We specifically give contracts to the air industry, the ship industry, the auto industry, the tech industry, etc. to design and develop wartime ships, planes, vehicles, tanks, etc.

To put a simple tax break into place to encourage American independence is a great trade-off in my book. And it’s pennies compared to those other industries.

I believe the mandate’s only good result is that it’s forcing engine producers to change the type of plastics in use so they are compatible with other fuel types.

My understanding is that one of the real directions for clean coal is methanol. With Trump’s support for all forms of energy, and his huge support for coal, and our hundreds of years proven reserves of coal, I know where this is going.

Agreed, but we have no shortage of petroleum feedstocks or refining capacity to justify ethanol mandates. The petroleum industry of 2015 is nothing like the petroleum industry of 1974.

North America can be “beyond” energy independent — we could EXPORT petroleum — if the FedGov would just get the hell out of the way.

Anyway, biofuels do not play much of a role as fuel for weaponry. The only reason the military is playing around with them is (again) to satisfy the earth worshippers.

The faithful followers of Jesus Christ do not need pandering to, we discern to words of the faithful who are not ashamed to Testify to their Faith. Ted Cruz unashamedly exemplifies the body of Christ.

Judging by the waistlines of many in that part of the country they are eating maybe too much beef and pork.

Actually, the obesity "epidemic" is fueled much more by corn (high-fructose corn syrup) than by meat. People would be much healthier if they ate more meat and less sweets.

I agree, the problem is paying for it. In the Era of Baraq, meat prices have skyrocketed.

Something that never seems to bother the MSM.
