Along Came Trump
Vanity | January 21, 2016 | true believer forever

Republican candidates have accused Donald Trump of being a closet liberal,  a Hillary plant,  someone with New York values,  donating to left-wing causes and left-wing politicians.  They say he isn't conservative enough to be President, and many have accused him of being a Democrat.  His political past makes him damaged goods and unacceptable to "Principled Conservatives" like Ted Cruz and his supporters.

Seventeen years before becoming a Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan began his political career as a Democrat. He joined numerous left-wing political committees and fought against Republican-sponsored right-to-work legislation. He was elected president of a large, famous union twice -- a union which had known communists among its members. As California governor, he signed into law a liberalization of abortion that led to an explosion of abortions in his state.

Ronald Reagan won the White House by asking men and women from all corners of the country, including Democrats and independents, to join his “community of shared values.” Unlike many in today’s Republican race, Reagan made an open appeal to Democrats on the campaign trail and at the GOP convention.  Reagan Democrats and independents answered his call for change. And then President Reagan changed the world.

On occasion, did he compromise on such conservative touchstone issues as taxes, entitlement programs and immigration reform? Yes, but always with the longer view in mind. In the end, did he succeed? Consider this: America’s victory in the Cold War freed tens of millions imprisoned by communism. Twenty million new jobs were created at home. Double-digit inflation and interest rates were wiped away. Unemployment fell to around 5.3% by the time he left office, and, more important, America’s national morale was restored.

John O’Sullivan of the National Review observed that “the fact” of America would always exist, but it was “the idea” of America that the 40th president restored. Many have been discouraged that there was no new Reagan on the horizon.

And then along came Trump.

No flames here. Just curious as to how the detractors of Trump make no mention of the Republicans who have held various Congressional offices since the 1960s and haven’t done jack squat in advancing the agenda.

Reagan ran and became the governor of California to create a record. When he ran for President we didn’t have to take his word for it that he’d “changed”. There was actual evidence. There is zero evidence for Trump - it all words that this point.

Did Reagan pander for votes in Iowa using my money? Trump just did.

This has been Rush's and Mark Steyn's point repeatedly: these bastions of conservatism always have an excuse in the real world. They NEVER make a "stand on a hill" for anything because, "well, we will get 'em next time."

I keep saying it's about what gets done. I'd rather have a guy I agree with on 50% of the issues---but it's those 50% of the issues that get done---than a guy I agree with on 100% of the issues that gets nothing done.

For example, if all Trump does is build the wall, shut down illegal immigration, and stop the Muslim influx, that would pretty much be a good presidency in my book. Anything beyond that is pure gravy.

Selective reasoning, but I think "principled conservatives" are allowed to do that - after all, it's the trump ruffians who are too stupid to know better.

You’re right.

Most Americans care a whole lot more about a candidates vision for the future than about how they got to where they are.

To borrow a bit of dialog from “Fargo” this past season which featured Reagan on the campaign trail in 1978, “He’s got a lot of charisma, I’ll give him that, but I’m not going to shake his hand”. “Why not?” “Because the man made a movie with a monkey - it wouldn’t be dignified”.

But when Reagan came past, the character above shook his hand and complimented him. Trump has the same kind of charisma that draws people to his side.

Trump kills 500 puppies on live TV with hammer, while declaring a 180 on all prior positions. Supporters declare, “We don’t give a rip. We love Trump!”

Show me Trump’s conservative record. Show me the time he has put in the liberty movement. Show me something other than words trump has done it increase freedom in America.

And if Trump paid for the care of feeding of 5,000 puppies, anti-Trumpettes would say it was just a fake publicity stunt because 20 years ago his 3rd cousin gave a puppy away ... and that proves he’s a liberal.
