Anti-Establishment Does Not Mean Pro-Conservative
Townhall.com ^ | January 27, 2016 | Ben Shapiro

Donald Trump will change everything.

This seems to be the consensus among anti-establishment Republicans. According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, Trump leads among anti-establishment primary voters with an actual majority of 51 percent. And a full 51 percent of Republicans think Trump is "the best choice to bring needed change to Washington, perhaps the single most crucial attribute to leaned Republicans."

Trump makes this case, too. He's said that he's the establishment's worst nightmare. He says he's too rich too be bought, too independent to care about what his enemies say, too powerful to be stopped. He'll stand up for the American people by standing against the powers-that-be.

Then he turns around and says he'll make deals. "I think the [establishment is] warming up," Trump said this week. "I want to be honest, I have received so many phone calls from people that you would call establishment, from people -- generally speaking ... conservatives, Republicans -- that want to come onto our team. We are getting calls from everybody that it's actually amazing. I'm actually surprised."

Why? Because, says Trump, unlike his chief rival, Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, he'll make deals. He's a deal-maker! "Guys like Ted Cruz will never make a deal because he's a strident guy," Trump said. "That's what the country's about really, isn't it?"

And Trump will make deals. He isn't lying. He's friendly with everybody on the Democratic side of the aisle. Here's Trump on House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.: "I think I'm going to be able to get along with Pelosi -- I've always had a good relationship with Nancy Pelosi." Here's Trump on Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.: He "always treated me nicely. We need that in Washington." Here's Trump on Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., godfather of amnesty: "I think I'll be able to get along well with Schumer, Chuck Schumer. I was always very good with Schumer. I was close to Schumer in many ways."

For that matter, here's Trump on Hillary Clinton circa 2012: "Hillary Clinton I think is a terrific woman." Here's Trump on President Obama circa 2009: "I think he's doing a really good job. ... He's really a champion."

It's not that Trump represents the establishment. He's still anti-establishment because he's not taking cues from them. He's running his own campaign, and he's following his own advice. But just because you oppose the establishment doesn't mean that you're a conservative. Trump opposes the establishment because he thinks of himself as a political outsider. The base opposes the establishment because they don't want Republicans in the establishment cutting bad deals with Democrats. Which means that Trump's anti-establishment viewpoint doesn't match up with that of the conservative base.

Trump may change Washington, D.C., but not in a way conservatives will like. He could be a Republican Barack Obama, but he won't be a conservative one. And another egomaniac without Constitutional strictures is the last thing we need.

I’m voting for Trump to break up the Republican party. Bulldoze so we can start over.

They had BOTH houses of Congress and did nothing to stop Obama. NOTHING.

Scamnesty, open borders, refugees by the hundreds of thousands invading our countries, ObamaScam skyrocketing healthcare costs.

Screw the GOPe. Time for them ALL to be tossed out of office.

They are the modern Vichy backing our destruction.

TRUMP is the hammer to do it.

Trump ‘16!

Pro-conservative does not mean pro-American. Most of these so called conservatives are Globalists first. They always want to ignore that little fact.

I would like to see what kind of deals he makes with Pelosi

(Hypothetically)

Trump gets:
The Wall
His tax plan
deregulation of business
better trade deals
and the military to destroy ISIS

Pelosi gets:
A gay pride parade in San Francisco

That is how he gets along with Pelosi.....

The Art of the Deal

Lets not forget what our current “conservative” reps have done for us, they give everything Obama/Pelosi wants in exchange for paying back their donors with subsidies... Yea us!

I wonder what position Trump would have to take to lose his supporters?

I am sure if he came out for amnesty tomorrow, saying it was a one-time thing to get our system back in line, they would flock to the internet to tell everyone how right he is and that the rest of us are too dogmatic and conservative.

Some key points frojm this thread :

Donald Trump will change everything.
.......
He's said that he's the establishment's worst nightmare. He says he's too rich too be bought, too independent to care about what his enemies say, too powerful to be stopped. He'll stand up for the American people by standing against the powers-that-be.
......
Then he turns around and says he'll make deals. “I think the [establishment is] warming up,” Trump said this week.

Yep, the deal making anti-establishment figure who the establishment likes because he will work with them.

Trump is everything to everyone.

Just like he will deport all illegals and just bring back the non-criminals, leaving the criminals behind.

Has all the bases covered.

The problem with making a “statement” with your vote is that the winner gets to be President for 4 years.

Still trying to figure out why Trump is viewed as the savior for stealing all of Cruz’ positions on Obamacare, Gang of 8, etc. when Cruz had them first.

Conservative doesn’t mean what I think it does either. These days it means open borders Mexicans and Moslems flood right on in. Too big to fail and TPP.

Cheap-labor-express globalist neocons co-opted the word conservative for their own elitist purposes.

Hell, with Bush we had the house, senate and a working majority in the supreme court. What did we get? 800,000 Moslems and prescription medicine welfare.

The GOP isn’t the answer. Tear it down. Go Trump.

NAILED IT.

Trump either doesn’t know or doesn’t care what the Constitution says. That’s made crystal clear whenever he talks too long about what he plans to do.

There’s nothing remotely conservative about that.

“Cheap-labor-express globalist neocons”

I agree each of these three groups exist.

However, they are not the same.

They intersect some, but they do not fully agree with one another.

For example, Neocons are / were pro-interventionist. Fine. That has nothing to do with border security and trade.

Free Traders are not necessarily in favor of Open Borders. It is perfectly reasonable to want a low- or no-tax regimen for trade, and simultaneously want very tight immigration policy.

I used to be a Neocon. Iraq chastened me. There are still neocons, among whom I no longer count myself.

I still am a Free Trader. I don’t think anyone should decide or tax whoever I choose to do business with.

I am a hard core immigration restrictionist. We have laws. They must be obeyed. I’ve never varied on that.

Still, I quite agree that when you combine all three of the groups you pointed to today, you get poisonous sorts like the Wall Street Journal.

Let’s just not perfectly conflate the three concepts. Each stands alone as an idea worthy of argument.
