They were of the wrong demographic to get away with it. It's not like they were the Black Panthers or Black Lives Matter types.

Drove at a LEO with a vehicle (assault with a deadly weapon), didn’t submit when given a lawful order and reached for a weapon.

I am in no way saying Finicum is without fault, but the Brown comparison is bogus.
Finicum et al were traveling to a public meeting with a sheriff at a senior center.
Brown had just committed strong arm robbery.
Finicum drove away from a stop after being shot at
Brown punched a cop in the head and then wrestled the cop for his gun
Finicum went off the road at a road block and immediately exited his vehicle with his hands raised
Brown charged at a cop while ignoring orders to stop

Two vehicles were involved in this incident. The first vehicle stopped at the first checkpoint. All the occupants of that vehicle are alive. The second vehicle took off from the first checkpoint. The passengers who stayed in that vehicle are alive, although they probably have ringing in the ears and watery dues due to the illegal actions of the driver. The driver of the second vehicle who led the police on a chase, was speeding, driving recklessly, got out of the vehicle and reached for his waistband is dead.
The fact that all of the occupants of the vehicles are alive except one is strong evidence that this wasn’t an ambush, execution or anything else that the conspiracy theorists can come up with.
In the video, between approximately 8:09 - 8:15 two flashes can be seen. Within two seconds of the second flash Finicum drives from the first stop. Victoria Sharp, who was a passenger in the truck driven by Livicum, said that after being shot at they began to realize that the police “meant business” and that Finicum yelled that he was going to continue driving so that he could “talk to the sheriff.”

That’s one of the ‘defenders.’ The LEOs had no idea what kind of firepower the people in those vehicles had. Put a guy with a badge and a gun in an unpredictable situation and he’ll do a predictable thing.
WTF did anyone think was going to happen when they left the “safety” of the wildlife refuge area to travel on open roads that would be crawling with Feds?
It looks like Mr. Finicum made his decision, got away from the vehicle with his companions in it and did what he said he was going to do. It seems like a waste, but his decision. I’m only objecting to the people screaming “Murder!” about it, and anyone who thought it was going to end any other way.

They committed a felony by the armed takeover of the wildlife refuge.
They resisted arrest and committed assault with a deadly weapon when they fled the traffic stop.
Mr. Finicum failed to obey a lawful order and whatever they call it when you reach for a weapon.
Probably a good man, arguably a noble cause, all jacked up.
The Brown comparison is bogus. The situations are not analogous.
