This strikes me as insane. They’ll be flocking to Rubio, who will be presented as the ‘reasonable’ candidate, in contrast to the crazies Trump and Cruz.

No matter how well they talk the talk, or even walk the walk sometimes, when it's a choice between standing on principle or staying a member of the clique in good standing those who are make it to acceptance by the in crowd will almost always stay with the clique, principles be damned.
It's human nature and overrides everything. For most people it's even more important than what they claim are their deeply held religious beliefs. People can rationalize away anything that stands in their way of material comfort and acceptance by a group.
When both are bundled together, don't waste your energy being angry and don't be surprised when you see someone you thought was solid makes a 180 degree turn.
