Ron Paul: Ted Cruz is no libertarian [truth is, libertarians in Iowa stood with Ted]
Politico ^ | February 5, 2016 | Eliza Collins

Now that Rand Paul is out of the race for the White House his father Ron Paul, who ran in 2008 and 2012, isn't impressed by Ted Cruz's attempts to pick up the "free market" libertarian banner.

"You take a guy like Cruz, people are liking the Cruz - they think he's for the free market, and [in reality] he's owned by Goldman Sachs. I mean, he and Hillary have more in common than we would have with either Cruz or Trump or any of them so I just don't think there is much picking," Paul said of the Texas senator on Fox Business' "Varney & Company" on Friday.

Surprisingly, the elder Paul seemed more attracted to the views of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is giving Hillary Clinton a run for her money in the Democratic primary.....

Sour Ron Paul grapes. Typical.

Remember the 2012 libertarian force in Iowa?

Ted Cruz's Quiet Coup in Iowa

They were there on Iowa Caucus night for Ted Cruz.

That article gives the history. Very good read.

Why is it everytime I see Ron Paul’s name I hear Roger Miller in my head singing “ Do-Wacka-Do”?

I think Ron has lost it.

Ted not a libertarian - wow, who knew??

Ted is a conservative Reaganite.

Some libertarians will vote for who appears to be a conservative Republican because they want to vote against liberals if they can’t win as libertarians.

Cruz is trying to rebuild the Reagan coalition, which did contain libertarians.

Hello, CW.

>> truth is, libertarians in Iowa stood with Ted

Wouldn’t that be a dilemma for the pedantic Cruzers that loathe everything libertarian?

Cruz isn’t a libertarian? What a revelation. Next thing you know he’ll tell us that Bolshevik Bernie isn’t a capitalist.

That said, Cruz WILL pick up quite a few libertarian votes due to his superior tax plan, which includes a 10% flat tax on income and capital gains, no deductions except for charity and mortgage interest, and the elimination of the estate, alternative minimum, Obamacare, and corporate income taxes.

Oh yeah, and one more small item — the elimination of the IRS.

"pedantic Cruzers"

Now there's an unbiased "stir the pot" remark.

If you didn't read Ted Cruz's Quiet Coup in Iowa, do.

It describes how the different factions of the Reagan coalition (despite much internal struggle) are aligning with Ted Cruz.

Cruzers are not against EVERYTHING libertarian.

Just some of their nuttier stances, like the stuff Paul agrees with Sanders on here.

I keep hearing the constant drumbeat than Cruz only won by 3 or 4 percent. Lost in those comments is the fact that he won while taking on the sacred cow of Iowa politics, Ethanol. The establishment came after him full bore., including a popular sitting governor.

His competition for lack of a better word, pandered and argued for the status quo. So much for bold leadership.

I was being terse. Seemed easier than writing:

"the conservative purists here on FR that are supporting Cruz"

Any libertarian here are FR knows to what I'm referring.

Regardless, I'm not castigating support for Cruz. He's awesome. But I'd rather have him in the Senate or SCOTUS.

Great article in your link to Caffeinated Thoughts, all libertarians should read it.

Cruz is engaging those who have disagreements with him and giving them reason to support him.

I have little problem with libertarians as well. I have a streak of it in me. What I object to is the anarchists who hide behind libertarianism.

I would have voted for Rand Paul, but with Paul out, I’ll probably go for Cruz.

I couldn’t vote for any of the other characters who are running.

Trust me, the "everything" wasn't overstated. And the qualifying adjective was pedantic, not all. Hell, I'm a Cruzer, and I'm also a conservative libertarian.

Cruz's ethanol victory is VERY instructive.

FR THREAD: How Cruz Crushed Ethanol - "Hot d*mn!" a gentleman shouted from the back of the room.

Direct link to original source: How Cruz Crushed Ethanol

[snip] ........"It was Iowa representative Steve King and an ethanol-industry executive, Dave Vander Griend, who brought the blend wall to his attention. Vander Griend, the CEO of Kansas-based ICM, which engineers and constructs ethanol plants, had requested meetings last fall with several Republican candidates. Cruz and Ben Carson were the only ones who responded to him. Cruz, he says, "didn't just smile and give lip service. He wanted to understand what the issue was with the RFS," and he assigned staff members to research the matter.................."
