Fans of the two competing teams to start.

(If it’s traditional teams like Steelers, Patriots, or Packers you get a huge number of diehards. If it’s a “new” team in the SB like Carolina you get a lot of “one time in my life” types.)

Then throw in a ton of locals who are “thrilled” to be “rewarded” with the “Super Bowl” experience by the NFL.

All the stuff here in Indy was mobbed.
That was Pats vs Giants.
Those east coast folks are serious big spenders.

It’s the last game of the season. Next is the combine, then the draft and then a bleak emptiness. Football fans go into withdrawal. It’s intensely painful, and nothing will assuage it until training camp.

If the ice storm that happened the last time the SB was in Atlanta proved one thing it’s that the SB and all of its craziness is 100% weatherproof.

Plus football just has higher ratings than the other sports.

And more natural breaks in the action to insert marketable commercial time than soccer, rugby, baseball, NASCAR, etc.

What I find funny Doughty, as I’m reading your post I look up at the TV and lo and behold, the podium the guys are sitting at doing their endless talking - has a Turkish Airlines logo on it! Gotta get the muzzies in on good old Americana, freakin dolts.

You say it’s civilization on parade.

I say it’s THE END of civilization on parade!

I’m sure there are negatives to be pointed to, but I don’t see the SuperBowl and surrounding activity as some sort of sign of our decaying civilization.

In Pro Sport I see the Bread and Circuses as attested to by the late Romans.

The regular man on the street is more concerned with sports than he is with the integrity of our nation.

I was an avid sports fan in my 20s. I always voted and paid attention to issues and candidates.

I suspect this segment of our society probably isn’t much different than others.
