The sexist double standard behind why millennials love Bernie Sanders
The Washington Post ^ | 2/4/16 | Catherine Rampell

Deploying Lena didn't work. Neither did shout-outs from Beyoncé, Kim, Ilana and Abbi, Ariana, Katy, Demi or either of the Amys.

(snip)

Why are so many young'uns feeling the Bern?

I see two main reasons.

The first is that, to millennials, Sanders's socialism is a feature, not a bug.

Much of the current conversation about Sanders's "democratic socialism" is predicated on whether Americans can look past this supposedly toxic label. But millennials love Sanders not despite his socialism, but because of it.

"Socialism" has never been a dirty word for the current cohort of youth, who either didn't live through the Cold War or don't remember it. We are more likely to associate socialism with prosperous, egalitarian, relatively well-functioning Scandinavian states -- the kinds of places that produce awesome things like Ikea and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" -- than with autocrats who starve their people.

It's a liberal pointing this out, and not too prominently, and it begs the question why conservatives aren't talking about this more, how much young people today don't know about recent history, and how much older people have forgotten it.

And of course, we talk so little about China, even though it is still anything but a free society even as it grows more powerful.

And the “sexist double standard” mentioned in the title is that Bernie can look like he just woke up because he is a man, while a woman politician can’t do that.

To a generation that’s broke, in debt, underemployed and stuck in its parents’ basements, promises of a political revolution, more equitable distribution of (other people’s) wealth, a more robust social safety net and free college can sound pretty appealing. BINGO!

I can’t even describe the revulsion I feel when I think of Communism and Socialism. Systems of oppression have been my enemy since I was old enough to comprehend them. My younger sister feels the same way. Unfortunately, we’re the exceptions to the rule.

This is, of course, a form of authenticity that is off-limits to any female politician, not just one with Clinton's baggage.

Female politicians - at least if they want to be taken seriously on a national stage - cannot be unkempt and unfiltered, hair mussed and voice raised. ... They can't be too quiet or too loud, too emotional or too cold, too meek or too aggressive, and so on.

Oh good grief Washington Post, give it a rest. Cankles is a blight on America. Stop making excuses for her.

This was pretty darned good.

Millenials scare me, as much as I like many of them. They really don't grasp how awful socialism is. And as Maha Rushi pointed out on the radio last week to an ignorant young skull of mush, Scandanavia is beginning to wake up to the unsustainability of its system.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the millennials react when they get smacked right between the eyes with reality....

Don’t have to go very far to find the “dirty word” in Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba, etc. if the MSM whores would report it .... wouldn’t be so appealing then!

I see grown adults today saying I was laid off, I can’t find a job, the new jobs don’t pay anything, the government destroyed the economy, F*** it, might as well get on the dole.

Not saying its right just that’s what I’m hearing more and more. Obama has presided over a country filled with a lot of hopeless people now.

Add in the millenials brainwashed by Marxist professors and there you have it.

The Democrats have a big problem -- they need to torpedo Bernie and push Hillary as their nominee. This can be done in two ways:

1) Blatant disregard of Hillary's obvious crimes.
2) Dirty tricks to kill Bernie's campaign which is clearly better and more popular than Hillary's campaign.

Young people are going to see this. What will young people think about how the Democrats' operate?

Trust me..They don't think that far down the road....They just think...Wouldn't it be wonderful if everything was free!!...Engage one as to who pays for it and you get stuttering and a blank stare....

I recently asked a young college graduate that is making about 40K in her 1st job.....Your younger brother is only making 20k a year in his 1st job....Do you feel an obligation to give him 10k of your money?????.....stuttering and a blank stare...(like Gee..I never thought about it that way)

I agree that many young people probably see socialism as a feature not a bug. The government-run schools have been lying about socialism for 50 years. But I will also give young people some benefit of the doubt and assume that much of their attraction to Sanders is that they know enough about Hillary Clinton to know that she is lying scum, bought and paid for, and her husband is a rapist.

“Millenials” are the people who go to Walmart in their pajamas. They don’t care that Bernie Sanders is disheveled, and they wouldn’t care if Hillary Clinton was, as well.

She’s not dressing/grooming for voters in their 20s, but for news personalities and writers in their 40s and 50s. They’re the ones who would scream if she appeared in “back to the 60s” style.
