The sexist double standard behind why millennials love Bernie Sanders
The Washington Post ^ | 2/4/16 | Catherine Rampell

Deploying Lena didn't work. Neither did shout-outs from Beyoncé, Kim, Ilana and Abbi, Ariana, Katy, Demi or either of the Amys.

(snip)

Why are so many young'uns feeling the Bern?

I see two main reasons.

The first is that, to millennials, Sanders's socialism is a feature, not a bug.

Much of the current conversation about Sanders's "democratic socialism" is predicated on whether Americans can look past this supposedly toxic label. But millennials love Sanders not despite his socialism, but because of it.

"Socialism" has never been a dirty word for the current cohort of youth, who either didn't live through the Cold War or don't remember it. We are more likely to associate socialism with prosperous, egalitarian, relatively well-functioning Scandinavian states -- the kinds of places that produce awesome things like Ikea and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" -- than with autocrats who starve their people.

Why are so many young’uns feeling the Bern?
no school loans to pay back
free housing
free food free
money from the rich
no need to work
Funny how the times change in the 60’s hippy days to have a young uns follow and old man like sanders was unheard of no matter what he was giving away

Socialism of a type worked for a while in Scandinavia partly because there was a good amount of capitalism mixed in, and because the populations are so homogeneous.

Socialism fails in countries where the population is diverse (like those in Latin America) where it quickly degenerates into a zero sum battle for government stolen goodies.

If full-throated socialism ever came to the US it would be more like Venezuela than Norway or Sweden.

On one of the debates when it was suggested what if it’s not Clinton but Sanders one of the Republican’s on the platform, I don’t remember who, said something to the effect of Sanders can’t win. Could never get elected.

Underestimating. I think he most certainly can. I think they are foolish to ignore this candidate.

It's a liberal pointing this out, and not too prominently, and it begs the question why conservatives aren't talking about this more, how much young people today don't know about recent history,

I'd say the more interesting questions are how and why conservatives abandoned the educational system and mass media to liberals and leftist radicals. The millennial generation's affection for socialism is a direct result of this. Home-schooling and ignoring popular culture might be great for one's own kids, but what sort of America have they grown up to live in when so many of their contemporaries have been indoctrinated in left-wing dogma since childhood?

“Why are so many young’uns feeling the Bern? “

Could it be they are only reflecting what they learn in the public school system??

Polls that I have heard about indicate that a significant percentage of millenials support the idea of socialism.

I heard a news blurb today that said that something like 90% of people think that America should tax the rich more.

I don’t see how this can be combatted without some life altering event (like a Greater Depression).

The diabolical thing is that Bernie did and he's leading these witless dupes over the cliff like a patchouli scented Pied Piper.

ronnie raygun:" no school loans to pay back "
"free housing"
"free food free"
"money from the rich"
"no need to work"

Exactly true
Bernie offers them cake ,.. when they want bread
Bernie says no need for work as your housing and food will be provided by others
Bernie says no need for money , .. look at me !(not mentioning that his worth is $1.2 million)
The benefits of Socialism has been taught to them by Socialist instructors in college,
while ignoring its failures, pograms, political purges, or intentional starvation of the masses.
Critical thinking and confrontation of professors in college results in academic punishment and ostracism
and litteral regurgitation of the professors words is rewarded.

And this educational behavior has been encouraged from Common Core programming right through college : "go along , to get along".
Many of these folks are no more socially, morally , or academicly aware than the drug-induced Hippies of the '60's ,
they just think they are intelligent since they have graduated and have these college loans to pay back.

It is true that most young people do not realize how bad socialism and communism is. It's not completely their fault as the schools teach it only as another form of government. They point to civilized and wealthy countries in Europe as an example of it and don't mention the gulags of the Soviet Union or Red China.

By the way, the main reason socialism even "works" in Europe is because the United States pours trillions of dollars into that region to provide them military protection. This allows these countries to take money that otherwise would have gone to military and defense and spend it on social welfare.

, Scandanavia is beginning to wake up to the unsustainability of its system.

There is a book Scandinavian Unexceptionalism: Culture, Markets and the Failure of Third-Way Socialism by Nima Sanandaji, out now about the Scandinavian countries. In the book, he establishes that those countries first made a lot wealth before they instituted their socialist systems.

Since they put in the socialist practices, they've actually done a lot worse to the point where some of them are now reversing the course and throwing out a lot of the socialist economics for a more free-market system.

Norway continues on its socialist path because of the great amount of money it's making off their oil. When the oil runs out, their system will start going bankrupt as well. Since they've started making economic reforms, Denmark is now rated a better free-market country than the U.S. Take that Bernie Sanders. Put that it into your socialist pipe and smoke it.

It's really two separate questions and the author got one of them spot-on. The good: yes, there is an entire cohort of young voters who weren't born when the Soviet Union fell. They don't get it. The Scandinavian countries staggering under immigration and debt are portrayed as paradises, and Venezuela never happened, or at least it can't happen here. Inequality of wealth is a cardinal sin. Racism is the ultimate sin. You can't talk youth out of certitude, you can only hope they grow out of it.

The bad: no, it isn't Bernie's rumpled appearance (that he can get away with because he's - gasp! - a male) that is putting him over Hillary. One's a septuagenarian crazy uncle who's promising them free money. The other is a nearly-septuagenarian totalitarian criminal who wants to control them. Guess who wins that one?

Socialism and its etymological offshoot "social justice" are systems consisting of theft and justification for theft. Political power confers the ability to commit theft without consequences - need I say more than "Hillary Clinton" to make that point? And so, with moral justification, however weak, and no consequences, we have the enshrinement of theft, a kleptocracy, a socialist paradise until the other people's money runs out. That, unfortunately, tends to be swift and irreversible. But that's for tomorrow, and tomorrow never comes.

I'm inclined to agree, which is why the current breathless speculation about the FBI finally forcing the likes of Loretta Lynch to forego quashing the charges against Hillary make me smile a cynical smile. She has, in addition, a near-monopoly on the super-delegates that infest the Democrat convention system. This one's about pure machine political power, amoral and utterly ruthless. They're going to have to make a show out of Bernie, complete with a fake reconciliation (bought by a cabinet office - sound familiar?) and a tearful pledge to throw his support to Her Heinousness. I'm hoping it won't be enough to put her over nationally but the convention is looking like a lock.
