I have read that it was not a gun-free zone, and that he had no problem with guns, but carried a baseball bat. No idea of his politics at all.

Just to be clear, it is not a Jewish restaurant. Hani is a Palestinian Christian (an outspoken Christian), who is from Israel. It is a Mediterranean style restaurant - mostly Greek. Nazareth’s is located in our neighborhood and is a favorite of my wife and myself.

I would surmise a Palestinian Christian is more of a target than a Jew.

Yeah, I think I have the right family. Did a little sleuthing. My old neighbors owned a Mediterranean cuisine restaurant that closed years ago, and in the same location Nazareth sprung up. I believe my old neighbor is the sister of the current owner, or a relative in some other fashion. Yes, to my knowledge, she was an Arab Christian married to an American Christian. We were neighbors just a few doors away from each other for 7-8 years. This is a weird story, because we lived right in that area of town. Watched it grow and change a lot in 25 years. It was cow pasture for a while before retail started being developed.
You must mean the Pomegranate. Hani (owner of Nazareth's) had his original restaurant in a strip mall near Route 161 and Cleveland Ave. Next door to The Palace bowling facility. It was very successful there and they outgrew their place, so they move across the street to a former Chili's restaurant, where they stayed for a couple of years. During that time, he decided to expand a bit and help someone (sounds like your neighbors) open a new location on Hamilton Rd. in Gahanna. They opened the Pomegranate. They lasted for about a year or so, then went under. Hani then took the place over and relocated from the former Chili's location to Gahanna. My wife and I go there fairly often. It's a great place.
Also, the Somali neighborhood that a few have mentioned is mostly in the Morse Rd. area near the old Northland Mall area, which is probably 4-5 miles west of Gahanna. Not sure if the culprit is from that area. Will be interesting to find out.
Here is a picture of Hani. He's fairly famous for carrying his aluminum bat around and patting it while asking if the customers are ready to leave. For those in Columbus, he's also a favorite of the Bass Brothers Restaurant Review with John Corby on 610 AM WTVN. They rate restaurants from 0-5 bellies.

Yes, it was Pomegranate. Only was open for a few years. Ate there only a handful of times, but had been to Nazareth once or twice many moons ago.
My kids went to DeSales so I’m well acquainted with little Somalia. I also worked at Marshall’s in Gahanna for several years, and it was very popular with Somalians, especially once the store on Innis was closed.
I miss Corby’s show more than anything else about Columbus. Listened daily after Rush’s show. Love the Big Bass Brothers reviews!!!!

I’m betting he was since he was found near Easton. I bet he was hoping to get home. I think I read he was found and confronted at Morse and Steltzer.

Ha ha, that’s cool. Yeah, when my son lived out of town , he (D.C.) he listened to Corby’s show via iHeart Radio. That’s how we found out about Nazareth’s - The Bass Brothers gave them a rare 5 bellies rating, so we tried them out. Several years ago, they received national attention when a restaurant magazine published the best restaurants in a wide range of categories. Nazareth’s was rated has having the best french fries in the national rating.

The attacker was identified as Mohammad Barry,... "There's nothing to lead us to believe this is anything more than a random attack," Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Rich WeinerAnd the voice over also said he traveled to Somalia. But we are assured they can find "no motive", just a "random" attack.
How stupid do they think we are?

To #1: additions to your comment of “A man named Mohammed attacks customers with a machete in a Jewish restaurant (or at least owned by an Israeli who may not be Jewish) called Nazareth and it is a random attack”, ADD: and a policeman with a Jewish name (Weiner, no not that other guy), doesn’t know if it is a targeted attack or not.
Let’s say that I think Mohammed was not just looking for “Finger food”.
To: MadMax, the Grinning Reaper
It’s infuriating how even Fox News tiptoes around the obvious. This “lone wolf” deflection is completely disingenuous. A person who acts alone, without a specific directive from a traditional chain of command, is still a terrorist if he’s motivated/encouraged/incited by the teachings of the leaders of his religion or political philosophy. islamic leaders have been calling for attacks on Jews and israelis, particularly knife and vehicular attacks, as we’ve seen all too often in Israel these past months. That most of the media and politicians try to lessen the significance of this type of attack demonstrates their stupidity and cowardice.
