Senior U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia found dead at West Texas ranch

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia's death.

"I was told it was this morning," Biery said of Scalia's death. "It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it's pretty vague right now as to how," he said. "My reaction is it's really unfortunate with any death. And now, politically, in the presidential cycle we're in my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected."

The Republicans in the senate have to prevent a Obama appointee confirmation by any means necessary.

Here are the Republicans in the Senate:

Here are the Republicans standing firm against THE WON:

You posted: "Just heard how he wasn't feeling good last night, how come he didn't go see a doctor?"

Same reason you or I don't go running to a doctor every time we are feeling under the weather. I remember my dad saying he felt "tired" and went and laid down. It was the last thing he ever said.

Agree, although it is a terrible and shocking loss.

Also sure there will be a complete and thorough investigation, and ALSO that President Obama will be prevented from appointing any replacement before his end of term.

God bless Justice Scalia and his family, and may he rest in peace. We better pull together and carry on in the meantime...

Lindsey Graham just said he wouldn’t want Ted Cruz to pick a SCOTUS Justice, he also said that he was more of a Roberts type than a Scalia Originalist.

Lindsay Graham is sounding GREAT!!! He’s saying that the Republicans will stop any nominations due to Obama and Reid changing the rules. He told them they’d regret the power grab and unless there’s an overwhelming consensus on a centrist judge... There will be no confirmations.

I would like to see all of the candidates at tonight’s debate give their opinion on who should replace Scalia.

Thank you for your assessment of a deadlocked case.

We will miss not only Justice Scalia's vote, but also his persuasiveness.

May Obama's nominations never leave Committee.

And Mitch McCOnnell is in charge of the Republicans and Harry Reid and Barak Hussein are in charge of Mitch McConnell.

My friend’s uncle was 48 years old, heavy smoker, was at work one day when he told his co-worker he “didnt feel good” went to go sit down, and dropped dead right there on the spot. Sounds like Justice Scalia had a massive heart attack and died in his sleep. Such a wonderful man, a brilliant man, I am still in shock

-- and Judge Napolitano is usually right ... --

ROTFL.

Senate rules are a little more complicated than that, but he is basically right. There are ways to get around the majority leader though. First place to hang up a nomination is in committee - although it would be a pretty cheap shot to subject a nominee to all that process, when the intention is to never take up the advise and consent role.

We'll see. Congress people march to their own drummer. Like an anthill.

I'm referring to Baldwin's saying "No, there will be no appointments until the next President.

And Baldwin is CORRECT. The nomination and hearings won't even begin until March at earliest. Streeeeeeeetch it to July and the Senate adjourns and nothing really won't happen until after the election in November. If a Republican is elected President, then definitely NOTHING will happen until 2017.

Thank you very much for this reply PJ!!! I'm sure we are all relieved to read your reply here, thank you again!

If Ginsberg dies or leaves the court soon, the pressure will be on to nominate and confirm at least one justice.
