The GOP's Authoritarian Frontrunner
Slate ^ | 02/24/2016 | Jamelle Bouie

Trump was winning handily with more than 45 percent of the vote and nearly 90 percent of the results counted, to about 23 percent for Rubio and about 22 percent for Cruz. Trump won with every demographic, exceeding Cruz with evangelicals and beating Rubio with more moderate Republicans.

It was a complete rout, and once again, Trump showed he was the only candidate with a coalition that can carry him through the entire primary, bringing working-class whites together with conservative evangelicals and Republican moderates. Indeed, Trump is poised to dominate in next week’s Super Tuesday primaries, where he leads in eight of the twelve contests. By this time next week, Trump could have a commanding lead in votes and delegates. And while it’s possible that this slips away in the face of party opposition, it’s unlikely.

Or, put simply, Donald Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. Period. Yes, Rubio is the favorite of the GOP establishment and Cruz is the candidate of conservative activists, but neither is close to overcoming Trump or turning this multi-candidate race into a one-on-one contest. Absent a major shift in the primary, Trump will reach escape velocity, and for the first time in the modern era, a genuine outsider will win a major party nomination, throwing his host—the Republican Party—into complete disarray. Or, as former Cruz spokesperson Amanda Carpenter said on CNN on Tuesday night, “I’m really struck in thinking about what a Donald Trump nomination would actually mean. I really think it’s the end of the Republican party."

Slate can see the writing on the wall. The GOP establishment is still reacting like the Trump ascendancy is a bad dream.

Talk about about a rout of the establishment, indeed.

Leftists hate authoritarians.

Unless the authoritarian is a leftist.

Yup. Trump is a strongman.

But definitely a populist strongman.

This pinhead says Trump voters are afraid. Wrong. We’re mad. Big difference. Afraid people run. Mad people fight. And we’re tired of fearful pubbies selling us out time and time again. This ends now.

I can’t think of a much more authoritarian action by a modern US president than siccing the IRS on opponents. Yet I imagine this columnist has apologized that away time and time again.

Trump is a reaction to the excesses of Obama AND the pusillanimousness of the GOP.

We need someone who can stem and reverse America’s decline.

People see Trump as a benevolent dictator - like Cinnatus.

Of course he’s authoritarian. That’s what makes him so attractive to his supporters.

We’re like Weimar Germany... a country circling the drain.

We’re looking at losing America - unless things change for good.

Latest meme from the GOPe seems to be;
Trump is only winning a majority of a very tiny slice of the electorate. Especially among Nevada Hispanics.

Only Rubio can win the holy Hispanic vote.

Rubio is surging.

I ain’t had this much fun since 1980.

It is coming close to the point I noted some time ago. If Trump wins early and then in the SEC and two weeks later, he will pivot his remarks to supporting outsiders running against the GOPe in Congress. Look at what he has done in such little time for his own campaign. He is already dropping off remarks at changing the “400” or so in his interview with Hannity.

I say that in noting Florida’s representative filing deadline is not until June 28 and the primary is August 30. I have seen that many other states are in the same situation.

David Brat did it in Virginia over Eric Cantor with very little spent (~100,000 vs. millions), imagine what a Trump endorsement would do for any upstart citizen legislator.

He may not be able to clean them all out, but if only 25% were primaried, imagine how that would shake up the establishment.

From your keyboard....

Let’s hope that DT starts building his coalition this spring and summer. Maybe he’ll stop on by AZ for a campaign stop with one of mccrazy’s primary opponents.
