Sri Srinivasan: potential supreme court nominee could break GOP blockade
MSN ^ | 2/24/2016 | David Smith

Senate Republicans refusing to countenance filling the US supreme court vacancy have, so far, been able to make it a debate about abstract concepts. But when Barack Obama names his nominee, that is set to change.

“They just keep digging themselves in a deeper and deeper hole,” Democratic senator Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday. “If anything, when the president nominates someone and there’s a real live person there, and I’m sure that person will be a very reasonable person to be on the court in the American people’s eyes, it’s going to get worse for them. It’s not going away.”

The Republicans might find they have a harder case to make in the court of public opinion if, for example, Sri Srinivasan, touted as a favourite among several strong contenders, gets the nod. Chris Coons, a Democratic member of the Senate judiciary committee, described him as “balanced” and “capable”.

Srinivasan, who turned 49 on Tuesday, has enjoyed a stellar career. He was born in India and migrated with his family to the US in the late 1960s.

He graduated from Stanford and lectured at Harvard. As a lawyer, one of his most high-profile cases was the defence of Jeffrey Skilling, the former Enron executive. As deputy solicitor general of the US, he argued 25 cases before the supreme court.

Crucially, he was nominated by Obama to the powerful US court of appeals for the District of Columbia circuit and was confirmed by the Senate in 2013 by a 97-0 vote. Republicans would therefore have to explain why, having approved him once, they are unwilling to consider him now.

“So why should that make a difference to you?”

I don’t know about “heights,” but it makes a big difference to me. We have absolutelhy no idea of how he was raised by culturally Indian parents.

“...and presumably has a completely American experience.”

I see you live a sheltered life - maybe you should get out and about more.

Wrong to assume that; it’s not necessarily true, not by a long shot.

While he wasn't born in the US, he was raised here since he was 2 or 3 years old and presumably has a completely American experience. This argument probably won't wash.

Well, unless he was raised in an orphanage, his parents, who raised him, could in *no way* raise him with American cultural values. In the 1960s, India was a socialist country.

You are correct. I misread the bio, thinking he was born there and moved here at 17. But yes, I think that we have a perfect right to demand the same consideration that we gave (who knows, maybe he will be an Indian Souter?) to the Dems, but why?

I’d like to see us go back to the good old days of we are not socialists as are many Democrats and we are not going to co-exist peacefully. It won’t work. I have no problem with “nuclear options” or any other method of fighting these people that we have had perpetrated on us. “Borking” actually became a part of our language. Many people, shallow as it may be, think of us as losers for constantly falling for this stuff.

Good answer. Some Freepers seem to think whites are the only real Americans.

I don’t see how in any stretch of the imagination this guy (who is a Hindu) would cause the Republicans to back down. I mean, who wants a Hindu on SCOTUS? That’s not even remotely representational of our population. No way do they back down for this clown.

Whoever Obummer nominates, he will be tainted with the stench of ObOzO. If he is such a great pick, President Trump can nominate him.

Are Dinesh D'Souza and Bobby Jindal socialists? Russia and Eastern Europe were communist for much of the 20th century. Are immigrants from those countries also suspect? Why not judge people based on their records rather than their ancestry? The racism is getting pretty thick on FR.

Yes. Nikki has turned out to be a stomach-wrenching wench!

I am embarrassed to admit, as a Floridian, I contributed to her gubernatorial campaign.

No more Indians! No Muslims and no more presidents of color.

Why would the DemocRats want to deprive President Hillary or President Bernie the opportunity to nominate someone that they want? Fair is fair, right?

Exactly. This is a rare opportunity for the american people to directly weigh-in on the appointment of a justice to the Supreme Court. In fact, we are presented with not just the opportunity to decide on a justice, but on the balance of the entire court since it is now fairly equally divided. It would be an outrage to deprive “We The People” of that opportunity.
