Go ahead and trust the IRS. My family was put in severe IRS jeopardy when a family member released the family business tax returns while under audit. Two of the people we did business with filed amended returns stopping the IRS audit of them temporarily. The IRS threatened my family member with all types of “crimes” including impeding an audit. Luckily we have a good lawyer. Still cost a ton of $$ to make it go away.
So, I suggest that you take the IRS at their word if they ever show up at your door. “We are only here to review your return.’
Well then based on what the head of the IRS has said in print and TV interviews, I think you might have a good case to take the IRS to court and sue them for your legal fees.
