Sowell: Desperate Tactics
Creators Syndicate ^ | March 8, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 03/07/2016 12:36:43 PM PST by jazusamo

It is desperation time for the Republican party establishment. Its extremely well financed favorite — Jeb Bush — never got anywhere with the voters in the primaries, and has already been forced out of the contest.

This should at least cause some second thoughts — or perhaps first thoughts — by people who keep repeating that money buys elections. It is one of many theories that seem impervious to evidence.

The desperation of the Republican establishment comes from the fact that the two biggest vote-getters in the Republican primaries — Donald Trump and Ted Cruz — are people they do not want to be the Republican candidate for President of the United States.

The immediate panic is over Donald Trump. His surprising string of victories in the primaries conceals his vulnerability in the general election in November. Most of Trump's primary victories were with less than 50 percent, and even with less than 40 percent. In the general election, less than 50 percent usually means losing.

Even more important, while Trump's style and substance may endear him to his followers, both that style and that substance are deeply offensive to many other people. Polls repeatedly show higher negative responses to him than to any other candidate.

Trump is not just in danger of losing this year's presidential election, which the Republicans would otherwise have a high probability of winning. He can poison the whole Republican brand, taking Republican members of Congress down with him, along with Republican governors and other state and local officials.

Stopping Trump is obviously a high priority for the Republican establishment, as shown by their biggest gun, Mitt Romney, suddenly coming out swinging against Trump in the media.

Me to, But this time Sowell is the elitist who is telling us that the guy who can work with the blue collar types can’t represent the GOP

Well, Trump may be able to relate to the blue collars, but he has had a lifetime of accomplishments (and some flops) but he is in the arena.

This time Sowell is in the Ivory tower. I’m sorry but Trump can trash Hillary and does not even care that her supporters are “deeply offended by his remarks”.

That is outstanding!!!!

I agree with your profile 100%...

I, personally, just think Trump will be good for America...Will bring America back up to where we once were...

MY opinion, as stated here several times, Trump 1st choice, Cruz my 2nd choice...

“...Why do you think he would honor it?...”

I have seen nothing that says he wouldn’t....

To me all they are trying to do (libertarian talking heads) is being paid to fool the American people into thinking free trade is good for them. We have had 20 years of free trade and the verdict is in and it failed the vast majority of wage earners.

At this point I think the conservative pundits were playing conservatives for suckers - they were making us conservatives upset on social issues to distract us while they allowed more free trade deals to go through and more illegal immigration. They conservative establishment conned us.

(For those who did not get what I was getting at the first read - I am not saying conservative values are a con - only that the Establishment used those conservative values to distract the base away from galvanizing around trade and immigration.)

Agreed...The GOPe tactics are pathetic, they’d much rather lose the election with another candidate like the last two than win with a Trump or Cruz.

You’ve pretty much summed up the central problem. The United States is the last hope to the world. With the European people starting to stir and even organize against open borders, the globalists don’t want us offering any hope.

Okay, so Donald Trump is winning the majority of primaries with less than 50%. So other candidates who get fewer votes, and lost the primaries, would do better in the general election? I’m sorry, Mr. Sowell this makes no sense!

I think you got it wrong. I do that before I have my coffee in the morning, just read the title and go from there. Mr. Sowell was just pointing out that they are targeting Trump right now, but if Cruz was in the lead, they would be just as bat s*** crazy.

"Stopping Trump is obviously a high priority for Republicans who honor the Constitution."

Had to laugh at that one.

The GOP honors the Constitution like muslims honor women.

Lots of nonGOPe Republicans on this site - are you sure you want to go with that?

It seems to me that it is Ted Cruz shredding the constitution at the first opportunity. Under the constitution he is not eligible to run, and there he is, running, and bringing with his run the very risk the will of the people will be ignored, and we will have a brokered convention and Romney again, or maybe Bush.

Trumps wounds are almost all self-inflicted. Totally disagree with the KKK attacks. Don’t think Trump is a bit racist, or at least I haven’t seen evidence of it. That said, he fumbled the David Duke-KKK question badly.

The real reason the GOPe is starting to line up behind Cruz. It haas nothing to do with them likiing Cruz.

Cruz is not GOPe, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Yeah a Ivy League educated lawyer-politician, who uses every far left trick available while campaigning. Sure no problem.

I agree, but so far that lining up is lukewarm and Romney chiming in like he is isn’t a good sign.
