That ended during the 1990’s.
The office of president should be respected, but it was never intended to be revered like a king. Considering that the press wanted Obama worshipped as a demigod, this is a good thing that the office is being set back to something more normal.
Exactly. The debates have not been about policy for the most part. The thing that comes through to the viewer is personal denigrating attacks cloaked as humor and Trump is so much better at that. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Cruz and Rubio is “lying Ted” and “little Mario”. The on line exchanges are beyond disgusting. This is a contest for the presidency.
This sort of political exchange is nothing new, it’s been around since surrogates for our founding fathers engaged in it. However, it’s no longer in the background, it’s ninety percent of the exchange between the principals. Rubio destroyed himself when he engaged in it front on. He probably won’t be able to get a job as a convenience store clerk anymore. Trump is the master and his misrepresentations are excused or defended by his supporters.
At this point reverence for anything having to do with the Federal government is about shot through.

Before that, Richard Nixon and ‘sock it to me’ on Laugh In.
“Trump is not individually responsible for the circus and the degree of reverence.”
Precisely. My wife asked me why I laughed when I read that word “reverence” applied to our politicians.
Full Definition of reverence
1: honor or respect felt or shown : deference; especially : profound adoring awed respect
2: a gesture of respect (as a bow)
3: the state of being revered
4: one held in reverence used as a title for a clergyman
We’ve received nothing but disrespect from our hired hands for about 25 years.
Trump is promising to do what they should be doing, but aren’t, and to stop those things that they have no business doing.
He is reflecting our contempt for the Uniparty prostitutes—whom Rush apparently thinks we might revere—and their TV, newspaper, magazine and, yes, radio stooges.
Some would say it started with Nixon resigning in 1974.
Recall that Ronald Reagan never ever entered his oval office unless he was fully dressed in the accouterments of his office . . . and he never even once put his feet up on his desk. He honored his office.
In Canada, and the other 15 nations of the Commonwealth Realm, we “revere” the Monarch as “Head of State”, who serves as the symbol of the Realm and the various nations within. The various Prime Ministers (Heads of Government) are seen as just the politicians they are — and treated accordingly. If they perform well, they have a high approval rating — if not, they are turfed out of office, as befits a democracy. The Office of the Prime Minister has power and authority — but neither the office, nor the incumbent are ever “revered”.
The U.S. President is both “Head of State” (deserving of reverence as a symbol of the country) and “Head of Government” (who must earn any respect given). When you have a President, who’s a disaster as “Head of Government”; things become confusing. How can you “revere” the Office of the President”, while detesting the incumbent?
Notice how Rush gives this soliloquy of Bush, then it is announced that Jeb! is calling a meeting of all the non-Trumps?
Apparently “lapsed Christians” just sort of started happening when Trump announced this past June.
Dat ole debbil got em. LOL
“The office of president should be respected, but it was never intended to be revered like a king. “
Exactly. There is a cult of the presidency. An example is the claim that the office is such a heavy labor that it visibly wears them down physically. Its the kind of thing that was often said about Hitler or Stalin, that they sacrificed their very health because they work so hard for the nation.
The truth is that any male of presidential age shows the same aging across 8 years. They are pampered, get vacations every few months that a normal citizen only dreams of once in a lifetime. Their amazing food is prepared by celebrity chefs anytime they wish. Massages, exercise, detailed examinations by doctors, sex from Hollywood starlets if they wish, etc.
It’s a miracle they survive the 8 years/s
There is nothing more classy than LBJ on the phone as president, belching and ordering pants. ;-)

That is shot in the bulls eye.
Don’t know about what JFK did but Clinton and “I didn’t have sex with that woman in the Oval Office” did.
I’m going to have to start listening in, because if he is this bad on open mic, good grief.
He is smart enough to realize what Trump is all about, and yet I feel like I need to pull the guy aside and slap some sense back into him.
I wish Secret Service agents could do an expose of their dealings with Presidents of the past 40 years.
Would be revealing of what the agents have to put up with. If a President or his family does not respect those SS agents, then those are the ones that have diminished the office they hold.
Thank you MileHi.
When did being Christian enough become such an issue for the voter
Carter was a deacon at Plains Baptist
Now that sure worked out
I’d vote for a secular Jew who thought like I do in a heartbeat if one was running
If he respected Christendom as his ally would be all I ask
How? Easy, you don’t “revere” a monarch, head of state, pope, preacher, or any fat farting potentate.... ever. They put their underwear on the same way you do. They go to the toilet in the morning and wipe their butt. Look at them like that and lose that respect. They are an employee, nothing more. Look at them with the same suspicion you would at someone who owes you money, or the way you would a probationary employee.
You don’t ever “revere” -any- human being beyond that which they personally earn. That is the road to all evil.
