What was used in Chicago was the semi automatic pistol version of the fully automatic MAC-10.
Wrong. The term “assault weapon” was invented in 1944 by Adolf Hitler. He used it to name the MP44 rifle, which fired a 7.92X39 cartridge. He named it the “sturmgewehr” or “assault rifle”, or “assault weapon” , depending on translation.

Wrong: Sturmgewehr translates to Assualt Rifle which is a specific type of automatic rifle.
Congress used the term Assualt Weapon starting in 1989 to try and cover a wide variety of weapons. (Sturmwaffe or Angriffs-waffe in German)
