From the comments:

Although I doubt there is much Melissa Click could have said to make me or others have a favorable opinion of her, I never dreamed that having been given the priceless opportunity to defend herself in the Washington Post she would disgrace herself once again. But that is clearly what she did. I wonder what the PR firm which she hired to rehabilitate her image thinks of this piece and the 99 percent negative comments?

Sadly, I think it all boils down to the fact that Melissa Click is simply not right for this era. She should have lived in Moscow in 1937, working as one of Yezhov's henchmen in an office with a 10-foot portrait of Stalin, rooting out "enemies of the people", real or imagined. Those of that era would have appreciated her talents more than we.

If by “took a chance” she means “crush anyone who questions you”, then the answer is that the world would be a considerably better, more civil, nurturing, tolerant place if Melissa Click and her ideological soulmates had never been. That isn’t the answer she’s looking for but it’s the truth.

Hang on, Comrade Melissa! Your friends on the FB team will boycott MU until you’re rehired!

Oh, guess not.

In tomorrow's paper: A defense of the Kristallnacht "demonstration" in which the feelings of the "demonstrators" had clearly been "disregarded" by the Jewish "patriarchy." Also, a reevaluation of Chinese communist reeducation camps during the Great Leap Forward, which were an entirely reasonable response in which the Party to "took risks" to address the "social justice" and "equity" of hierarchical wealth divisions in 20th century China.

Here's another: But, hey...look on the bright side of things, Melissa...

Most academics write reams of nonsense (with the lofty, self-important title of "peer reviewed publications") in order to become recognized as experts in their chosen fields of study.

You, on the other hand, have risen above such pedestrian pursuits and have actually now become a Subject of Study in media communications and journalism. Thanks to your own dogged persistence (some might say, stubbornness) in refusing to acknowledge error, in denying any fault or accepting any personal responsibility for your actions you have earned a place in countless future textbooks, discussions and lectures about what NOT to do.

Yes, it's true. If you had merely apologized and owned up to your stupidity at the outset of this mess it would have been quickly swept out of sight and your, no doubt, illustrious academic future would have been secure.

But you were better than that. And much, much more clever.

No, you chose the brave path of defiance. You were going to stick it to the man and show the world that no one would ever make a fool of the future feminist hall-of-famer, Melissa A. Click Ph. D.

Except you. You made a fool of yourself quite nicely. Good form, Melissa. Well done and bravo. You are now and forever after, part of the story. It's a crap story but you own it.

Who would've thought it could be this instructive to read the WaPo? Certainly not I.

They keep getting better and better. I should just fix myself a cocktail right now and just really surrender to the jollies.

I don’t want to live in a world where citizens are too afraid of public scorn to take a chance. Do you? ==========================================

I want to live in a country where people who have views and actions anathema to the Bill of Rights ARE COMPLETELY SCORNED, and ridiculed for good measure.

In a just world people would be demanding Click hurry up with their Mocha Lattes.

That video had nothing to do with this thread.

I hadn’t read the linked article at that time ... the article went off on a wild tangent from the excerpt that was posted. The posted video link is a good one nevertheless.

Likewise! Here’s a comment that puts it especially well:
___________________________________________________________________________________________
What a goofball you are...

“I do not understand the widespread impulse to shame those whose best intentions unfortunately result in imperfect actions.”

Best intentions? You mean those things that are used for road materials to hell. It’s always intentions that you wish to be judged by rather than results. In this case your intentions were to protest until university administrators were terminated. Instead you got canned. Hard cheese.

And face it...your problem isn’t a lack of shame.

“Reaction to the footage containing my errors has resulted in...the loss of my job.”

No, you lost your job because you violated another person’s civil rights. Plus, you are a venal and nasty person with a foul mouth and a raging temper.

“I never used my authority as a professor in the actions I took...”

As a professor, your authority is implied to exist in any situation that involves students. Students defy a professor at their academic peril. It is not dissimilar to workplace intimidation.

“I am also working to come to terms with how a few captured moments of imperfection could eclipse 12 years of excellence.”

You seem to have an odd take on excellence. It is also very reasonable to expect that there is a substantial volume of “imperfection” with you that has never been captured on video.

“I don’t want to live in a world where citizens are too afraid of public scorn to take a chance.”

And no one wants to attend a school where free speech is held hostage by thugs (such as yourself) who use threat of physical violence against those with opposing views. Funny world.

“...what value do our rights as citizens have in a culture increasingly ruled by snap judgments and by regulations that are easily rewritten to suit changing political interests?”

This last quote, where you whine about rights of citizens is particularly ironic. You really have a serious problem with self-awareness.

Hope you enjoy life outside academia. Hope the thousands more like you also get the chance.

The Post is totally remiss for not pointing out Melissa Click was caught on bodycam video throwing herself in front on the Homecoming parade and dropping f-bombs on a Columbia Police officer trying to herd her back to the sidewalk.

And she did all this in front of her own children.

That’s what ultimately got her fired.”

Melissa Click: “What would our world be like if no one ever took a chance?”

Sounds like she is trying to talk herself into going to bed with someone with AIDS.

I am all for taking a chance - with a bit of common sense in the mix. I do it a lot regarding some stocks/funds.

But I don’t think that is what she is trying to talk herself into. Probably it’s someone with AIDS.

The responses brought out the literary and moral excellence of the posters! I expect the Catholic Church and the evangelicals to chime in shortly.

This post led me to watch her shouting curse words at cops on You Tube. And I do agree with my fellow freeper: she may very well be Carrot Top. Or his evil twin sister.
