A transcript of Donald Trump’s meeting with The Washington Post editorial board
The Washington Post ^ | March 21 2016

HIATT: So what do you think China’s aims are in the South China Sea?

TRUMP: Well I know China very well, because I deal with China all the time. I’ve done very well. China’s unbelievably ambitious. China is, uh… I mean, when I deal with China, you know, I have the Bank of America building, I’ve done some great deals with China. I do deals with them all the time on, you know, selling apartments, and, you know, people say ‘oh that’s not the same thing.’ The level of… uh, the largest bank in the world, 400 million customers, is a tenant of mine in New York, in Manhattan. The biggest bank in China. The biggest bank in the world.

China has got unbelievable ambitions. China feels very invincible. We have rebuilt China. They have drained so much money out of our country that they’ve rebuilt China. Without us, you wouldn’t see the airports and the roadways and the bridges; I mean, the George Washington Bridge is like, that’s like a trinket compared to the bridges that they’ve built in China. We don’t build anymore, and it, you know, we had our day. But China, if you look at what’s going on in China, you know, they go down to seven percent or eight percent and it’s like a national catastrophe. Our GDP is right now zero. Essentially zero.

-snip-

RYAN: You [MUFFLED] mentioned a few minutes earlier here that you would knock ISIS. You’ve mentioned it many times. You’ve also mentioned the risk of putting American troop in a danger area. If you could substantially reduce the risk of harm to ground troops, would you use a battlefield nuclear weapon to take out ISIS?

TRUMP: I don’t want to use, I don’t want to start the process of nuclear. Remember the one thing that everybody has said, I’m a counterpuncher. Rubio hit me. Bush hit me. When I said low energy, he’s a low-energy individual, he hit me first. I spent, by the way he spent 18 million dollars’ worth of negative ads on me. That’s putting [MUFFLED]…

RYAN: This is about ISIS. You would not use a tactical nuclear weapon against ISIS?

[CROSSTALK]

TRUMP: I’ll tell you one thing, this is a very good looking group of people here.  Could I just go around so I know who the hell I’m talking to?

“Cruz would eviscerate her.”

I’m not a Cruz guy, but I have to differ here. Cruz, the supposed “great” debater. Funny, at the debates when Trump was attacking him, Ted got this embarrassed, sheepish, look on his face. He looked like the kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He was very uncomfortable. Trump was eating his lunch. So would Hillary, but we won’t get to find out since Trump will win the nomination the old fashioned way, he’ll EARN it, with votes and 1237 plus delegates.

GO TRUMP!

“Cruz would eviscerate her.”

On the contrary, Cruz keeps eviscerating himself, especially when he recently sided with the violent Chicago socialist-communist revolutionaries against Trump and the attendees of the Trump rally.

You simply don’t understand the relevance of Trump’s answer. I would agree he needs to bring his speaking down to levels most Americans will understand

Wrong. The question pertained to China's buildup in the South China Sea and Trump simply didn't understand the question. As such, he sure as hell showed he doesn't grasp the extent of China's aims in the South China Sea.

Trump said nothing about China's designs on the Spratley Islands and other expansion in that region, focusing on three main islands — the Fiery Cross Reef, Mischief Reef, and the Subi Reef, while dredging and creating islands of their own. This causes major disruption in shipping in the area, not to mention an unprecedented military presence.

Trump stumbled in every direction in response to that question because he had no clue.

I’ve regularly said that Donald speaks like a spoiled third grader. I think I’ll have to alter that. By third grade they teach you that every complete sentence has to have a subject and a verb. He clearly hasn’t reached that threshold.

And yet he is winning the majority of delegates in the primary and hitting new highs in the poll. People seem to understand Trump just fine - even with no "subject and verb" sentences.

In this election cycle and many others, the candidates who do it in your favored way, using the highest grade level communication, lose.

If he gets the nomination, Hillary will skewer him with this. We saw a hint of it in her ad in response to Trump’s very funny barking ad

And the people who care about this were not voting for Trump anyway...

Serious question for you and all those on here who don't support Trump. If and When he gets the nomination, will you still be posting your anti-Trump articles to assist Hillary or will you eventually come on board to defeat the democrats?

He did, you didn’t understand his answer...trade, trade, trade...that is the strategic key to China, historically and today. Trump is ahead of the curve on just about every issue...and he is on this one as well. One dimensional thinkers like Cruz and most politicians simply do not get it. Trump does.

Cruz would eviscerate her.

I've heard this leading up to the Republican debates and yet it did not happen.

I doubt he'd do any better against Hillary. Cruz seems to think it is a Harvard debate and some moderator will award him the win.

Cruz is on minimally less boring than Hillary. I doubt many would listen. But then I don’t worship the fulfiller of the Momon prophesy and anointed one.

Yawn. You deluded Cruzies are going to need to do better than this. Trump won. Time to get on the Trump train or support Hillary. Those are the two choices.

[Cruz would eviscerate her.]

That’s a laugh! You clearly haven’t been paying attention at the debates.

When Cruz gets knocked against the ropes, he goes into a full blown stuttering and stammering episode of ZERO substance. Hillary will keep pummelling at him.

Cruz’s style of “debating” is like how the US and British fought each other in the Rev. War. Units line up across from each other, fire, and hope you killed more people then they did. Doesn’t work in this cutthroat era of politics.

Whereas Trump’s style is more akin to a B-52 carpet bombing Cambodia to the stone age. Quick, intense, and effective.

A rapport with the audience is far more critical than superior debating skills.

If you cannot make an emotional connection to people, being the smartest guy in the room is of no help.

Trump seems to have that connection to people and Cruz doesn’t.

Its not just the luck of the draw that defines a leader.

IF he gets the nomination, there is no point in posting anything negative about him. This isn’t over yet. Today’s results should clarify that in some respects.

Cruz was embarrassed by Trump’s juvenile name-calling and insults which is not political discourse. Cruz will not sink to that level. Cruz will eviscerate Hillary since the discussion would be on a higher plane- policy rather than personal attacks.

Wrong, Cruz blamed the rioters for their actions and held Trump accountable for his well documented statements about violence.

"People seem to understand Trump just fine - even with no "subject and verb" sentences."

Not really. It's far worse than that. People read into his comments whatever they themselves want to hear. He thus becomes everything to everyone. The last successful presidential candidate to do this was named Obama.

In the Republican debates, Cruz would not sink to insults and name-calling. In the Presidential debates, he will eviscerate Hillary since the level of discourse will be higher and focused on policy differences.

Please.

The buildup in the SCS is military... and that was the subject matter at hand.

Completely different situation. I have certainly been paying attention to the ridiculous Trump posturing and juvenile attacks in the debates. Cruz was embarrassed for Trump’s childish name calling and insults and would not sink to that level. Policy will be debated in the Presidential debates and Cruz will clean Hillary’s clock.
