Wrong number? Trump's TV telephone interviews in spotlight
AP News via Townhall.com ^ | March 26, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) — In television news, a telephone interview is typically frowned upon. Donald Trump's fondness for them is changing habits and causing consternation in newsrooms, while challenging political traditions.

Two organizations are circulating petitions to encourage Sunday morning political shows to hang up on Trump. Some prominent holdouts, like Fox's Chris Wallace, refuse to do on-air phoners. Others argue that a phone interview is better than no interview at all.

Except in news emergencies, producers usually avoid phoners because television is a visual medium — a face-to-face discussion between a newsmaker and questioner is preferable to a picture of an anchor listening to a disembodied voice.

It's easy to see why Trump likes them. There's no travel or TV makeup involved; if he wishes to, Trump can talk to Matt Lauer without changing out of his pajamas. They often put an interviewer at a disadvantage, since it's harder to interrupt or ask follow-up questions, and impossible to tell if a subject is being coached.

As the general election campaign starts, all the media will put a ban on Trump’s phone interviews. The coddling and billions in free coverage intended to get this guaranteed general election loser the nomination will end.

Imho a phone interview is more interesting and seems more like breaking news.

There was a time reporters asked a Question and shut up. The audience doesn’t need the interviewer doing most of the talking.

Frankly, if they don’t want to accept the terms of the interviewee, they don’t have to have the interview.

Trump is maximizing his time on the air by switch ling calls, rather than dedicating hours to showing on one program. Maybe Trump could meet them halfway using Skype.

Once the general election starts up and Cruz is in rehab or on a spiritual retreat, we will be talking about Clinton’s sexual abuse of women and Hillary’s emails all day long. It’ll be great.

They need to get his reaction to things, more than he needs them.

He can issue a press release, and his supporters will post it far and wide all over the internet.

Nice try, though.

Trump could set up a remote studio in his plane. Remember that Palin had a remote studio in her home in Alaska.

Trump makes himself more available to the media on a regular basis than any candidate in history and the lying weasel that wrote this story knows it.

The phone call interviews and frequent live interviews certainly reduce the importance of advertising and reliance upon the PAC’s and Lobbyists for money. But, we want them to buy our candidates right? We want them to influence regulation, issues, candidate choice, etc. right? THINK PEOPLE!! Trump is showing the way to freedom!!!

I like the phone interviews because the biased hateful idiots in the media don’t have total control.

If they don’t want to take his call, they can announce it and none of us will bother watching..

Even Anderson Pooper gets it:

During an appearance on CNN last week, former GOP candidate Carly Fiorina complained about media attention paid to Trump, leading Anderson Cooper to shoot back: "Donald Trump returned phone calls and was willing to do interviews, which was something your campaign, frankly, was unwilling to do."

Part of winning the media game is being courteous and returning calls. Trump is generally willing to do interviews no matter what the channel so long as your name is not Megyn Kelly.

Times have changed. Increasingly people are on their phones, tablets, or laptops doing other things while listening to the TV. Interviews are an audio medium, and only when there are compelling images (Brussels, for example) do people look up from their "small screens."

Fox & Friends and other programs have mentioned more than once that they invite all the candidates to come on and Trump is normally the only one that will.

Is it Trump who called off a (more or less) one-on-one debate with Cruz?

Maybe Trump thinks it’s time to operate from behind the lines.

That’s why I call him “Chick’n Trump”

Exactly; Trump was always available for anyone on Fox and now the two liberal sons of Murdoch in their early 40’s run Fox. Rupert turned it over to James.
