Transportation Secretary: Inequitable Distribution of Sidewalks Is Obstacle to American Dream
cns news ^ | 3/31/16 | Eric Scheiner

(CNSNews.com) - Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told a crowd in North Carolina Tuesday that “only 49% of low-income neighborhoods have sidewalks” while more affluent areas have near 90%. In order to have a society where “everyone has a shot at the American Dream, than it’s imperative that we acknowledge these challenges.”

Foxx made the comments to the Charlotte Rotary Club where he discussed the ways that infrastructure should connect people to opportunity.

During his speech, Foxx referenced a map of Atlanta that showed areas of pedestrian and bicycle accidents. “The grey areas represent communities of concentrated poverty. This is representative of what’s occurring nationally, which is not surprising, because only 49% of low-income neighborhoods have sidewalks. In high-income areas the number is closer to 90%.”

Now we need a federal program to build sidewalks

What we need is local planning boards that don't sell out to contractors by using variances that create high density neighborhoods which devolve into cesspools.

Sounds like a good project for jailhouse work parties. Instead of them laying around watching TV and pumping iron put them to work being of use to society. Beside from what videos of the Ferguson incident I saw they don’t walk on the sidewalks anyway.

What about storm drains?

There’s inequality there also.

I grew up the hood, no one walks on sidewalks, they walk in the streets, right in front of traffic ...

“only 49% of low-income neighborhoods have sidewalks”

Well, ghetto activists are always trying to “get kids off the streets”, so I would think they would be fine with the lack of sidewalks.

The states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specfic power to regulate, tax and spend for INTRAstate sidewalks.

In fact, if the federal government wasn’t stealing state revenues with unconstitutional federal taxes, taxes which Congress cannot justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers, then the states would have more revenues to run their universities, have their own healthcare programs, and build more sidewalks.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

Remember in November !

So if patriots elect Trump, Cruz, or whatever conservative they elect, they will also need to elect a new, state sovereignty-respecting Congress that will work within its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers to support the president, and also put a stop to unconstitutional federal taxes.

In fact, note that such a Congress will also probably be willing to fire state sovereignty-ignoring activist justices.

I live in a small coastal town in Florida. We don't have sidewalks and don't want them, either.

The Defartment of Transportation is another Federal crap-house that can be gotten rid of.

All the newer additions here have the rounded curb. Didn’t realize that’s why they did it. I thought it was to save money since there are no driveway dips. They just run the machine straight down the street. I hate them. Makes for a bumpy ride out of the driveway.

No worries, when Hillary is elected she’ll have someone even worse and we’ll get our sidewalks and we’ll pay for them.

I like how my neighborhood’s sidewalks are spotty. It keeps the ghetto people from sauntering up and down the block looking for stuff to steal.

Well “Steal more easily” I guess, because they still plague us, just at a slightly lower rate.

Does anyone want to know the reason for this? How about this: City and County ordinances require that development agreements with developers require that new and redevelopments require the construction of sidewalks when areas are newly developed or redeveloped. That’s been going on for years, and is likely the reason for this disparity, since poor minorities do not normally live in newly developed or redeveloped areas.

How is that racial discrimination?

“Now we need a federal program to build sidewalks”

Look up “Safe Routes to School”...just one of many ways federal funds are used to build sidewalks.

We spent millions in my neighborhood to make sidewalks wheelchair friendly....

Millions? Must have been a helluva large neighborhood, or someone really got ripped off.

The state route 28 East of Pineville, Louisiana,
has a side walk on the streetside, where the restaurants
are located. At each end where a stoplight is located, there
are no crosswalks. There are churches, a
supermarket, and local branches of banks, on the
opposite side of the street, and no sidewalks.

How many of these low income neighborhoods are small villages and farmland? The pigs love the new sidewalk.

My parents live in a much more affluent area then I do.

They don't have sidewalks. We do.

It is usually older areas that have side walks.

The TS is full of BS.

Now we need a federal program to build sidewalks.

Wake up, where have you been. The feds have been funding sidewalk improvement projects for years.

Look at earth-view photos of Detroit. There are perfect sidewalks with the (expensive) rectangle yellow safety things on many corners. The only issue is that all, or most of the structures within the blocks are removed, decaying, or unlived-in. There’s no one there, but their rights are secured...
