CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR JUST CHILLIN OUT
FRANCK: SONATA FOR VIOLIN & PIANO IN A, ALLEGRETTO POCO MOSSOLike Anton Bruckner, Cesar Franck was a church organist, in this case at the Church of Ste.-Clothilde in the Paris suburbs. Unlike Bruckner, Cesar had contracted a bad marriage to a shrill woman who was insanely jealous. This piece was one of three connected to Augusta Holmes, a piano student of his.
Augusta was beautiful, blonde, well endowed, and she loved showing them off. When Nick Rimsky-Korsakov visited Paris for the 1889 exhibition and saw her, he murmured, Tres decolletage! Thats French for Nice rack! Augusta was content to be the mistress of all the great creative artists in Paris and turned down many proposals of marriage, no fewer than three from Saint-Saens himself. She assumed that when she signed up for piano lessons with Cesar, he would take her to bed like all the others. But Cesar was a good Catholic boy, and he didnt stray from his wife although it probably would have done him no end of good. His unfulfilled desire for Augusta filled his Symphony in D minor, the Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor, and this Violin Sonata. His wife hated all three pieces because she knew she could not have possibly been the source of the yearning expressed in each work.
The premiere of this sonata was given at a private party with Saint-Saens on the piano. Just as the concert was to start, there was a power failure. That didnt stop Camille, who played the piano part from memory in the dark, as did the violinist. But Camille hated Francks sonata so much that he threw the score on the floor after the concert to show that he thought it was a piece of merde. He couldnt have been more wrong.
The finale is a work of beautiful counterpoint, marked allegretto poco mosso, which does not mean quickly poke the moss, but moderately fast with some motion. This is a recording of Jeremy Denk and Joshua Bell, done live in the WQXR studios in New York. You can get it on their latest disk. I saw Jeremy in Vancouver (BC) last year, and he gives a wonderful recital.

DEBUSSY: DANCETo wrap it up, heres some Impressionism from Debussy. Unlike his slower pieces, this one has some movement to it, as the title would indicate. Next week its Classical Music for Chair Dancing. Good night!
