Free Trade and the De-Industrialization of the United States

Manufacturing was the economic growth engine of United States. It helped to create the high paying jobs, improved living standards, national wealth, military might, and tax revenues. Unfortunately, there has been a dramatic decline in the above scenario for the United States in the 21st century. The U.S is rapidly turning into non-Super Power second rate country.

Manufacturing is the basis for research and development and National Defense and once represented more than 28% of the jobs in the U.S. Although the absolute number of jobs in American manufacturing was rather constant at about 17 million from 1969 to 2002, manufacturing’s share of jobs has continued to decline from about 28% in 1962 to only 8% in 2014.

Why not answer my question:

Answer mine first.

Don’t forget to add anti-American bureaucracies such as the EPA, and stifling corporate tax rates to the list.

Agreed, but you may remember in 2008 one candidate was a war veteran with years of experience in government, while the other had no experience and campaigned on “hope & change”.

Today we again have one candidate with years of experience in government, including the “war” in Begahzi and the other with no experience promising more hope & more change.

And you may remember that in 2008 one candidate promised to turn back the tides of global warming, and today another candidate promises to turn back the tides of not just illegal immigration, but also imported products which drown out, they say, high paying American jobs.

So, how well did that candidate of 2008 do?
How much hopey changey did YOU get?
How much better do you suppose today’s promises will perform?

So we are heading for complete de industrialization except for a few niche industries. Are you OK with that?

“So we are heading for complete de industrialization except for a few niche industries. Are you OK with that?”

Do you believe that the pace of productivity or technology advances that displace workers should be limited to ensure that every one has a job?

That has NOTHING to do with offshoring. Your brain is miswired. You try to paint protectionism as somehow anti productivity and anti technology. What a crock of sh!t.

Who is “Economy in Crisis”?

According to their “Who We Are” page (1), only the following three people are named: a 9/11 Truther, a radical left-wing Air America personality and a regular Huffington Post contributor. If you disagree with those sources, you may wish to reconsider the general validity of this article.

Here are the people listed on the “Economy in Crisis” “Who We Are” page:

PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS - 9/11 TRUTHER (2):
Roberts comments on the “scientific impossibility” of the official explanation for the events on 9/11. On August 18, 2006, he wrote:

I will begin by stating what we know to be a solid incontrovertible scientific fact. We know that it is strictly impossible for any building, much less steel columned buildings, to “pancake” at free fall speed. Therefore, it is a non-controversial fact that the official explanation of the collapse of the WTC buildings is false.... Since the damning incontrovertible fact has not been investigated, speculation and “conspiracy theories” have filled the void.[42]

In November 2012 Roberts, referred to al Qaeda’s role in the attack as “unsubstantiated.”[43]

THOM HARTMANN – AIR AMERICA RADIO (3)

“Thom Hartmann is the #1 progressive radio talk show host in the US”

PAT CHOATE – HUFFINGTON POST (4)

“In 1996, he was Ross Perot’s vice presidential running mate.”

“A man is known by the company he keeps.” If you don’t prefer to keep company with 9/11 Truthers, Air America, The Huffington Post, and central_va, please do skip this article.

“That has NOTHING to do with offshoring. Your brain is miswired. You try to paint protectionism as somehow anti productivity and anti technology. What a crock of sh!t.”

It has everything to do with the decline in the percentage of Americans who work in manufacturing. The percentage of American workers in manufacturing began to decline in 1950. That was a long time before ‘offshoring’, NAFTA, etc.

If we are going to protect jobs from offshoring, why shouldn’t we protect them from productivity increases or technology changes?

You are going for linkage that isn't there. Grasping at straws. Liberals do that.

Here are your last two posts. Is name-calling the best you can do to support your arguments?

You got off easy being called a liberal. He called me a traitor! Cursing and name-calling are all that’s left to offer when emotion overtakes reason.

He also said my brain was miswired too. BTW, were you the regular old run-of-the mill traitor or were you a ‘free-traitor’?

I support all the candidates with a decent chance of defeating Hillary Clinton. I consider anyone currently in the race for the Republican nomination to be far superior to either Democrat.

Question for those who favor so-called “free trade” on the grounds that it represents economic “freedom”...

What is your position on slavery?

http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2014/sep/17/modern-day-slavery-malaysia-electronics-industry

Do you believe that American jobs should be lost to countries that employ forced labor?

Or does economic “freedom” only apply to the elites?

You expect me believe that BS? You probably are a Cruz supporter. So just admit it. All Free Traitors™ are Cruzaders.

NOBODY is neutral between Cruz and Trump at this point.

At this point I am for a complete embargo on every consumer good being imported.

Do you believe that American jobs should be lost to countries that employ forced labor?

Hell no.

Or does economic “freedom” only apply to the elites?

Their idea of freedom is to impoverish the USA and set up a two tier South American type society. The Brazil model.
