North Korea’s Largest Recent Defector Group Arrives in South Korea

The group of 13 worked in a North Korean restaurant in an unidentified country

SEOUL—In one of the largest known group defections of North Koreans in recent years, 13 restaurant workers from the country have arrived together in South Korea, Seoul said.

The group of one male manager and 12 female employees were based at a restaurant in an undisclosed country outside North Korea and reached South Korea on Thursday, a spokesman for South Korea’s Unification Ministry said.

The defection is unusual because of the size of the group and because North Koreans who are allowed to work abroad are regarded among the most loyal to the Pyongyang regime. Group defections by North Koreans are also usually by families or those with very close ties because of a culture of individuals informing on each other to the authorities.

According to a news article in Korean, they worked at Ryukyung Restaurant located in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China.

Arm them and place them along the boarder.

Kind of weird. Earlier today I was checking out the Izziban Korean BBQ & Sushi buffet restaurant in the area. I might eat there soon even though a bit pricey.

Workers at restaurants are among some 50,000 North Koreans who human-rights groups estimate are based outside the country and expected to send most of their income back to the government.

In other words they are slaves.

I stand corrected. I would think they have NK secret service watching them all the time, especially in China. But I guess if China “let” them escape, that could mean China is not happy with what NK is doing at this time.

They do. Those in charge at the restaurant will be severely punished. China is less than happy with N. Korea. However, they only do some act of token protest. This could be one of them. Not substantive in the long-term but making things a little harder for Pyongyang.

A very astute observation. It could also be that the right palms were greased with some good ol’ fashioned capitalist cash too. As FReeper central_va stated upthread, the families of these now-free North Koreans will doubtless be put to death, or tortured to the point where they will pray for death.

“Offering the finest North Korean cuisine!”

I can see the menu now:

Grass and wildflower salad

Bark soup

Entree - Bark and leaves casserole

For dessert - ice.

I’m afraid that bark and leaves cannot aspire to the status of cuisine, even if you throw in roots!

To discourage defection, workers at North Korean restaurants, as well as diplomats and others who are allowed to travel, are generally required to have family members remain in North Korea.

The spokesman said the group was concerned about their families and he called on North Korea not to punish them.

Hostages.

A technique originating in the USSR.

Hope they all kissed their mom and dad good bye.
