When John Kerry toured the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Museum this week before meeting foreign ministers at the G-7 Summit, Reuters reports that he had witnessed “haunting displays [of] photographs of badly burned victims, the tattered and stained clothes they wore and statues depicting them with flesh melting from their limbs.”
“It is a stunning display. It is a gut-wrenching display,” explained Kerry. “It is a reminder of the depth of the obligation every one of us in public life carries … to create and pursue a world free from nuclear weapons.”
Iran exempted, of course.
But, really, is this the lesson of Hiroshima? That those in public life have an obligation to do away with nuclear weapons? A lot of people might argue that existence of those weapons have saved lives from broader world conflicts and conventional warfare. That includes ending the Second World War sooner.

My Dad (also served in the Pacific) was likewise told that despite being temporarily sidelined from a sniper shot that got him in the arm (that was in ‘44), that he would very likely be participating in the invasion of Japan as well, which is why 99.99 percent of our soldiers in the Pacific said “God Bless Harry Truman” for having the guts to drop the atomic bombs.
Ah, if only I could be such “complete moron” like Trump. But of course only “complete morons” can own a private company worth billions.
The Japanese were in this to the death, and Truman made the right decision.

My Father was in the Navy fighting in the South Pacific during WWII.
He served on a Sub Chaser and a Military Tug. On the Tug their Job was to tow stranded Landing Craft off the Beach Heads while under fire throughout the Island hopping Campaign.
They almost got blown out of the Water by one of our own Destroyers when the Captain didn’t follow Orders and got in the way of our Warships. He was trying to be a Hero and almost got the entire Crew killed.
My Father even lived through the Major Typhoon that sunk many of our Ships. They made it through but everyone on Board was beyond Seasick, even the old Salts. It was the most miserable time he remembers.
If we had been forced to Invade Japan, there is a good chance I wouldn’t be here today to tell the tale and I assume the same goes for many here as well.
We took lives to save lives, such is the reality of War.
