I was in the state of Bahia in the town of Salvador where the slavers made port back in the day. I traveled to my start up assignment about 140 km every day so I got to see a large piece of the State and the impoverishment that went with it. From people selling a downsized armadillo that grew there to seafood along the roads to overloaded buses that ran off the sides of the mountains killing hundreds.
The town was a mess and the people were dirt poor and wages were suppressed beyond belief. I made twice as much a month on my COLA (cost of living allowance) as they did in a month.
The Brazilian government had bounties on homeless children. Do not know if it was dead or alive just that they were paying a bounty. We were warned not to leave our kids unattended when we went to the Marcados or on the beaches. The river that ran through the city was the main sewer line and where it dumped into the Atlantic/Caribbean children would be seen down there fighting the buzzards over discarded waste.
The people on this post seem like this country just got this way overnight with this president. It has been this way a long time. Graft and corruption is #1 priority and a way of life.
