Madrid cracks down on dog owners who leave a trail of poop on city sidewalks

Derelict-in-their-duties dog owners of Madrid have been put on notice: Pick up your pet’s poop or pay a hefty fine. You might even find yourself cleaning the streets. While it’s difficult, not to mention unpleasant, to quantify, the Spanish capital seems to handily outdistance any U.S. city when it comes to the volume of dog droppings besmirching its pedestrian pathways. That’s true from the early morning, when Madrid’s parents must navigate a minefield as they shepherd their children to school and then rush off to work, through the daytime hours and the afternoon trek home, before, if anything, the problem grows more acute as night falls and the obstacles become less readily apparent. The proposal to clamp down was announced Monday by Mayor Manuela Carmena, a retired judge who took office a year ago, defeating a countess backed by the ruling Popular Party. Dog owners who fail to pick up after their pets face a fine of up to €1,500 ($1,700) if caught. The plan will be rolled across two areas — thus far unnamed — that local authorities have deemed the most fecally challenged, with police patrols watching for offences, the Associated Press and local media outlets reported. For those who resist paying their fines, or can’t pay, Carmena has suggested that city councilors allow the option of instead working on a street or neighborhood cleanup crew on the weekend.

When my sister lived in Manhattan some years ago her admonition to me when I visited was “never walk and look up at the same time!”

Perhaps Carmena and the city councilors could set an example and donate their weekends to the job.

A wise move, if you ask me.

I clean up after my dog on the trails.

And I’m a responsible dog owner.

I pity those who leave the landscape a sighsore.

Bet they didn’t have this problem when Franco was in charge.

I had a neighbor whose dog would often leave a gift on my lawn during walks, near some bushes on the edge of my front lawn, near the street.

Its not someplace someone would typically walk and perhaps the spot could be considered somewhat “out of sight” - but I nonetheless found it incredibly rude, figured out who it was literally told her to “cut the sh**.” She didn’t think it was a big deal, which angered me even more.

It was pretty bad when I lived in the Bronx many decades ago. It was like a minefield except there were a lot more "mines"

Now my neighbors walk crap their dogs on other peoples' lawns. I don't get it. They obviously think dog squeeze on the lawn is undesirable or they'd crap their four legged sh!t factories on their own property. What I don't get it the monumental arrogance the owners exhibit when they deposit fresh stinking dog feces on someone else's lawn.

Now if we can just force the homeless in San Francisco to clean up after themselves.

Some comedian said once that “if aliens exist and came here and saw a human picking up dog crap they would assume dogs were the dominant species”.

You want arrogance? Last week one of those people walked their dog without a leash (broken law #1) by my house, and WHILE I WAS STANDING ON MY PORCH, he watched me watch his dog run to the middle of my yard and take a crap (broken law #2). Dog runs back to him and he keeps on walking. I went over to him and told him to pick it up. Response? “Oh, I thought I didn’t have a bag with me to pick it up.” Then he pulls out a bag, picks it up and walks off, acts like nothing happened.

“I had a neighbor whose dog would often leave a gift on my lawn during walks, near some bushes on the edge of my front lawn, near the street.”

Many years ago I had a neighbor who would let his two rottweilers out every evening for their daily BM, often on my property. Finally, one day I grabbed a shovel, scooped up their latest poop, and left it on his front porch. I never again had that issue with his dogs.

Dogs have it made. They get to walk around naked and the world is their toilet.

Series, I had a neighbor who allowed their dog to do the same thing.
Spend a dollar and buy a cheap jar of red pepper flakes.
Shake it all around the spot and it will be last time he visits.

That’s when you pull out your baggie, pick up the dog log and throw it at him.

Red pepper flakes all over the yard...not a bad idea.

I had a very carefully manicured lawn in front of my small home. Came out one time to find a guy from down the street standing at the curb with his dog circling in the middle of my lawn to take a dump. I yelled out, I don’t know which to shoot first, you or the dog. He zoomed up, picked up his pet and headed away saying “the dog has to go somewhere” to which I retorted, how about your yard.

Yes, it seems the perfect place for dog owners to walk their dogs is on someone else’s property.

In another comment, someone mentioned the red pepper flakes, yes they do work. I also love the comment to take the turd and drop it on their front porch. That works as long as you know which house it belongs to.

"The only reason some people are still alive is that it is against the law to kill them" I think it was Mark Twain who first put this in print.

Prolly just the approx. 5X5 area he likes.
Dogs like to return to the scene of the crime.
My bulldog thinks he’s 1/2 bloodhound and 1/2 water dog.
