Donald Trump’s More Accepting Views on Gay Issues Set Him Apart in G.O.P.
New York Times ^ | April 22, 2016 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

...

His history with the gay community is a long one. He donated to charities focused on the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and early ’90s. In 2000, when he briefly considered running for president, he gave an interview to The Advocate, a gay magazine, in which he supported amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act to “include a ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.”

“It would be simple. It would be straightforward,” Mr. Trump said in the interview, adding, “It’s only fair.”

Sixteen years later, gay rights advocates are still trying to persuade Congress to pass a similar measure, but they have struggled to win support, especially from Republicans. The last Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, opposed similar legislation in 2012.

Mr. Trump declined to be interviewed for this article.

His ease with gay people does not seem to be the result of deep soul searching, but, rather, the product of the Manhattan social and political world he has inhabited the past five decades.

“I live in New York. I know many, many gay people. Tremendous people,” Mr. Trump said in an interview in 2011.

He has been playful at times, such as in 2000, when he and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani appeared in a skit for a political roast, during which Mr. Trump nuzzled and caressed the mayor, who was dressed in drag.

Friends say he also views gay rights through the lens of a bottom line-minded businessman.

“His key concern is, Are you capable and able to do the job I hired you for? And if you are, very little else matters,” said Abe Wallach, an openly gay executive at the Trump Organization in the 1990s.

You’re not a rape victim, or someone else with reasonable anxieties in the subject.
Segregated washrooms were created by most societies for good reason. Just because that’s working pretty well in preventing problems doesn’t mean we should facilitate those problems thru legislation. Tolerating exceptions and minor transgressions is fine; forbidding averting the onset of a serious problem isn’t.

Most rapes occur outside public bathrooms. I’m hard pressed to think of a case where a rape occurred in one. I’m sure there are such cases but how would a different law have prevented it?

Law abiding people like us sometimes forget that criminals have no regard for the law. I don’t think we can legislate away crime, as much as we like to think it is that easy.

Since he is an outsider and has no record of governance, we won’t be able to predict if he’ll govern as a conservative or a liberal when it comes to social issues. And we won’t know until after 1/20/17.

We do have a way to predict...it’s called the past....Cruz has pointed out his liberalism at every turn and was labeled lyin Ted for his troubles.
When someone has an election year conversion he’s the one lyin. We know he has no core values.

We know he won’t build a wall or deport illegals or defund planned parenthood. We know he will raise taxes “ on the rich” while hiding income only the rich can take advantage. We know he won’t cut the department of education or any other bloated department...

.most of us do know how he will govern. We’ve seen this guy before his conversion

CW2... The good guys are too few and if they haven’t yet, WHEN? The time will come when they’ll consider themselves fortunate if they are allowed to leave. Pretty sure they won’t get a reservation like the last batch of conquered.

Even if there is a 1 in 1,000 chance that he will govern conservatively on 1 out of 100 issues, that's better than dealing with the Hildabeast.

Ted Cruz: “Some states have made decisions one way on gay marriage. Some states have made decisions the other way. And that’s the great thing about our Constitution, is different states can make different decisions depending on the values of their citizens.”

I hate perversion, but where could a transgender use the bathroom? If they march into a men’s bathroom of urinals there will be problems. As a female I don’t want them with me. But at least I have a private stall.

I wish that denying them use of a bathroom would change the orientation but it won’t as they are sick. I am just as uncomfortable with a lesbian in the restroom with me. Not much of an easy fix.

Doesn't it always start with "too few"?

He lost my support with his stance on allowing men into women's restrooms. I'm done with him.

No offense meant but this is the first time I've seen someone shake off the Trump trance. However, if you step back and look at the man, he's nothing like he pretends to be; he's a poser on virtually every issue. No way in hell a man reaches old age and suddenly changes his entire world outlook; human nature doesn't work that way.

If you want to know what he really believes, look at the positions he held ten years ago.

You might soon...given the number of people arriving here bringing with them a rapist culture.

While, for the record, I want 3 types of restrooms (his, hers, its) in my utopia, I still wonder: Why are we even talking about this?

Why do we let the left write the dialogues? This is a petty, leftist issue, too petty imo even to be handled by states.

The only way it is not absurdly petty is when you factor in the insidious leftist metastasis. Once the fed gov rules on what the fed gov property policy is, w/r/t restrooms, states will follow and private businesses will follow. (Insofar as any business is "private" these days.)

Government is not an end for leftists, it's a means. They're not trying to make government more fair. You don't do that by hoisting the flag of restroom access.

We shouldn't let them select the issues. Never mind who's in the damned restrooms. Who's in the country illegally?

Egads and Gadzooks! How dare he, back then as pure businessman, and now as Presidential candidate have such views.......

"It could very well be that he is pivoting on his rock-ribbed conservative values in order to make him acceptable in the general election."

It could also very well be that his life long liberal values are showing through his well practiced façade. I believe the latter.

CW2 won't work (unless you mean "culture war" v2.0). We have to get in there and change the culture so that people once again become "circumcised in the heart" (cf Rom 2:29). Until that happens, the country will just continue left, regardless of what you or I want.

Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's.

Caesar is getting to be due an ass kicking.

Read all of Romans 1 to read this in context: Romans 1: 18-28 NASB

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper

de·praved
ADJECTIVE
morally corrupt; wicked:
"a depraved indifference to human life"

I totally agree that this is a leftist issue and conservative politicians should not get sucked up into it. Because however they respond will be used against them to so them as being "intolerant" and what not.

Unfortunately this is an emotionally charged issue for conservatives and so we are falling into the trap.

I agree with Trump's response the most. Just keep it the way it is and enforce the laws that are on the books.

No, it doesn't. Worse yet, it doesn't always start at all.

And even if it did, would we hear about it? If we heard, would we hear the truth? Probably 95 percent of the people whose job it is to "inform" us, will be voting for Hillary Clinton in November.

Yeah, you'd think that but...no.
See, the difference is that Hillary! has to contend with the loyal opposition while Trump, as a nominal Republican, will have no brakes and so his potential for mischief is unbounded.
