Trump takes back claim he could eliminate national debt

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump this week walked back his assertion that he could eliminate the country's debt after two terms as president.

In an interview with Fortune Magazine published Friday, Trump was asked how his pledge to pay off the $19 trillion debt in 10 years was possible. "No, I didn’t say 10 years," Trump responded. "First of all, with low interest rates, you can think in terms of refinancings, and get it down. I believe you can do certain things to pay off the debt more quickly. The most important thing is to make sure the economy stays strong. You can do it in smaller chunks. You can do it in larger chunks. And you can do it in refinancings."

Trump had, in fact, told The Washington Post editorial board earlier this month that he would pay off the debt in eight years by renegotiating trade deals. The Post called that claim "nonsensical."

His plan was also derided by budget hawks, who called it ridiculous.

Trump added in the Fortune interview that he now wants to pay off a "percentage" of it, but he hasn't decided what that figure would be.

These are the kinds of people that support Trump.

Ted can't even come close to getting these kinds of supporters.

And didn’t reduce other taxes to compensate for the load on the economy.

Turns out that it was all bubble and the load burst it.

You’ll be voting for Donald Trump if he wins the nomination, understand?

He hasn’t changed what he has said, Ass. He has pointed out another angle on it.

I know name calling and bringing up Cruz is a standard MO when Trump gets caught in another mess, but here he is in his own words making the claim

My hunch is we are going to see alot more of this “explaining what he really meant to say” as the months wear

I think the Capitol Building needs turned into a museum with enough tours to generate money to keep it open. All Congressional offices should be sold. A college or university could use them for offices, classrooms, and/or dorms. Congress members should have to live, and not just have a home, in thier districts (obviously just the state for Senators). They can have one office, one secretary, and mailing privileges paid for by us. With modern tech, debating and voting can be done via telecom services. It can be live streamed. Easy peasy.

It’s nice to have a politician who doesn’t use a canned speech and thus makes mistakes or dramatic statements. Makes it more interesting. Reporters are supposed to ask questions and find out details. Gives them something to do besides grabbing the candidate and trying to sue the staff.

I’m wondering why nobody grilled him on it if it was as purported, Ass.

Yup

More name calling when Trump is questioned. I don’t blame you, though. Trump does the same thing

Don’t be surprised to be taken seriously on its common meaning.

The government reported surpluses, but the national debt went up every year. The closest they got was (I think) 1998, when the debt only increased by $18,000,000,000; but never went down.

Words, once spoken, can’t be taken back.

That is true, in a sense. But, if words are understood to be just words when spoken, there should be no need to take them back. Words may never actually disappear, but they can be ignored and forgotten. And, that's just as good.

He will be disappointing greatly all those admiring fans as he changes the tune on all his supposed platform positions. He is not who he says he is, except maybe one who cares less than little girls getting assaulted in bathrooms.

Trump’s platform:

https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions

can anyone see which of these will be broken by him?

All I did was point Trump’s own words out and look at the reaction.

Expect this type of reaction to rise as it becomes clear the nomination is Trump’s and he starts showing his inner Democrat

No inner Democrat would even talk about letting the debt stay put, let alone paying it, “Applesauce.”

ALL the income tax revenue over an entire 8 year term wouldn't even do that.

Tax revenue is over 3 trillion over year, so it could be paid off, but everyone loves their gravy, so that ain't happening...

Just how does he plan to “refinance” the debt? He’s thinking in terms of business plans and any govt bureaucracy has NOTHING to do with a business that has to balance its books.

They will not be disappointed, they will make excuses and name call. This thread is proof positive. What I think is so funny is the pic posting in an attemp to insult Cruz voters. It’s like obama’s hashtag diplomacy. #CubanMistressCrisis=#BringBackOurGirls.
