I think a lot of the posters on government access to iPhones, etc. distinguished “probable cause” with “fishing expedition” data access. I’d make the distinction, allowing “probable cause” based taps.

You were told, correctly, that the federal government has no right to demand that companies compromise their security software to make it easier for the government to hack in.
The government had a right to the data, but they had possession of all the data on the phone. That data just happened to be encrypted, which was bad luck for the government.
