Unstereotyped: Meet the white valedictorian of a historically black college

At first glance, Joshua Packwood is the embodiment of white privilege: He's college educated, married, a father of two and he runs a successful hedge fund in Manhattan.

But his life, which began in Kansas City, Missouri, hasn't always been so good.

Before Packwood was born, his father was in a motorcycle accident that left him unable to walk or talk. His mother had to care for her ailing husband and two sons alone. Eventually, Packwood's father went into an assisted living facility and his mother began a relationship with a man who became physically abusive. At the same time, she was struggling to find steady work and pay rent.

Packwood's clashes with his stepfather forced him to make the painful choice to leave home. He was just 11 years old.

"Economically now, I'm at the top, and so from one perspective I recognize that I'm very fortunate, and a lot of that is white privilege," said Packwood.

It was a good article until he uttered this pap.

God forbid he praise God, a good work ethic, and good friends to get him to where he is.

He didn't learn much over the years IMO

Doesn’t sound like he had a lot to thank his parents for, though in his father’s case that really wasn’t his fault.

“And parents. Don’t forget the parents.”

The black friend had both parents. Imagine that, kids, especially males, need both parents to become contributing members of society. Perhaps if the liberal social experiment of removing husbands and fathers from black society would stop, then black families could shake the chains off and finally leave the plantation.

But no, the reward was not from hard-work, but from his white skin...at a black college. (scratching my head at that one)

Historically black colleges?? Why is this not racist?

And where are the historical white colleges???

Why do we have school busing for blacks after huge amounts of govt force and tax dollars but it's fine for blacks to segregate themselves??

There's NO justice in America anymore.

I was thinking the same thing, but in my case I was wondering why he had chalked it up to white privilege instead of his transformation due to having a loving stable family environment in which to grow. For that was the catalyst that produced the change within him, not the color of his skin.

Do you really think there would have been an article written had there not been for this pap? Come on! This is CNN we’re talking about!

The whole article is a load of crap. White students have been attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for decades, and not because they grew up with African-American foster parents.

I live within 25 miles of two HBCUs. Both have had white kickers on their football teams for years, and one of the schools had a starting white QB. Beyond that, HBCUs with professional schools often fill out their classes with white students, because many African-American applicants don’t qualify for admission to law, pharmacy or medical school.

One of the HBCUs in my area has a well-regarded pharmacy program and they place their students in internships in a number of area drug stores, including the one where I get most of my prescriptions filled. About two-thirds of the pharmacy students who have interned at my drug store, enrolled at the HBCU, have been white.

The great irony? No one accused the HBCU of reverse discrimination by admitting white students ahead of minorities. In fact, it helps keep the program afloat by filling up each year’s pharmacy class. Of course, the school doesn’t publicize that fact, but it’s a necessity to keep the program open. Obviously, the number of white students enrolled at any HBCU is rather small, but the idea that the guy from Morehouse is unique is simply rubbish.

He’s a dumbass. I have nothing against him personally, but if he can come from a broken home, move in with a foster family for a year, and go from a loser to straight A student, then go to college and finish number #1 at that college where he was a minority and reduce ALL OF HIS SUCCESS IN LIFE to a mythical “white privilege” that clearly did not do a damn thing for him...THEN HE’S A DUMBASS!

You could say that Donald Trump benefited from WHITE PRIVILEGE. There's no doubt about that. But Packwood? Actually, he's white trash who managed to become successful. And it's not because of the color of his skin. But he chose to work hard and to accomplish things on his own.

“You could say that Donald Trump benefited from WHITE PRIVILEGE. There’s no doubt about that.”

Really? Trump’s failed numerous times. He learns from his mistakes. How did being white ever help Trump? His family’s money provided him with a good education and great connections. Would being black have mattered if his dad was worth 200-300,000,000 dollars? I’m a success - albeit not rich I would say - because of what my parents gave me and my refusal to be a loser. It would be no different if I were black and my parents provided me with the same and I had the same determination. I, in fact, would be more successful if I were black - because so many things were free for the taking if I were black. I’m not kidding. I saw this first hand.

It wasn’t an experiment.
