SCHUBERT: QUINTET IN C, D. 956, ALLEGRETTO

The rondo finale sounds like a German folk dance, but the demons are there just beneath the surface. The opening struggles through several minor keys before settling triumphantly into C Major. The harmonizing chords come from the opening chord of the first movement, providing unity to the piece.

The battle between darkness and light that has been going on throughout the quintet erupts in the coda at 7:47 when the piece suddenly turns dark, and the demons come out of the ground. The battle goes all the way to final bar, where Schubert pulls off his masterstroke, a grinding Neapolitan grace note for the last chord. It always reminds me of the last scene of “Carrie” where Cissy Spacek’s hand comes out of the grave. Light has won. Or has it?

BRAHMS: QUINTET IN G, OP. 111, ALLEGRO NON TROPPO MA CON BRIO

This is late Brahms, the composer with the beard and the expensive Cuban stogies. This was supposed to be Brahms’ valedictory piece. He had turned 55, made his money, and wanted to kick back and relax. And that’s what he until he met the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld five years later. But that’s another story.

Brahms wrote a lot of string quartets, but only published three. He was aware that Beethoven had set the standard, and he didn’t want to compete with the man, even though he had been dead for decades. But quintets and sextets weren’t a problem, and Brahms was happy to write in both forms.

This piece started out as his fifth symphony, but after drafting one movement, Brahms decided to scale it down to a quintet. In the first movement, you can hear that the basic idea is still symphonic. The first subject on cello just takes your breath away. The second subject is wonderfully beautiful. This video observes the exposition repeat, which is great because it’s hard to get enough of those two wonderful tunes.

The development turns dark but is very short. The recap is re-composed, as Brahms preferred. The coda slows it down, appears to resolve quietly, but then Brahms takes your breath away one last time for the final bars.

BRAHMS: QUINTET IN G, OP. 111, ADAGIO

This the quiet side of Brahms and a bit contemplative. The passion emerges in the central panel, and at the transition to the opening material, Brahms writes a short passage for gypsy viola. (Writing for gypsy violin would have been too hackneyed for him.) It ends as it began.

Rather than write a scherzo, Brahms opts for a short intermezzo, and it has a sad, breathless quality. The “trio” sections turns briefly sunny. The first section returns, but Brahms bases the short coda on the central panel.
