I don’t see a lot of Freepers defying the Feds at the moment.

We're not defying the feds, nor will we. We are good little tax paying subjects, nothing more.

I’m not willing to stick my neck out alone and in doing so threaten my family’s wellbeing.

There are many things the individual can do, without direct defiance. Being entirely debt free is one of those things. There are many others, but that is a start. But you see, there is a problem even here, since many of us want a house of our own, and as such, have a mortgage payment. We like "things" - our toys, big screen TV's, etc. - and in general, that usually leads to debt.
