Nicholas Maduro, the Venezuelan president declared a 60-day state of emergency on Friday due to what he called plots from within the OPEC country and the United States to topple his leftist government.

Mr. Maduro did not provide details of the measure. A previous state of emergency, implemented in states near the Colombian border last year, suspended constitutional rights guarantees in those areas.......

Earlier on Friday, U.S. intelligence officials told reporters they were increasingly worried about the potential for an economic and political meltdown in Venezuela and predicted Mr. Maduro was not likely to complete his term.....

A standard ploy of socialist dictatorships is the threat of Yankee Invasion.

Seeing what socialism has done to a wealthy country like Venezuela should be a warning to us, but the NEA has produced a population of nonfunctioning illiterate drones.

Just an observation, but isn’t the country supposed to be on the verge of starving to death? I see an awful lot of overweight people in that photo. Maybe under socialism you eat everything that’s given to you until there is nothing left?

Of course not. That is just their go to excuse. He needs emergency powers because then he can shut down the National Assembly. Currently the National Assembly is 112 against and 55 for him.

This has been going on so long in Venezuela that they are starting to get used to it. It is becoming part of their culture now. The suffering, the long lines, the abuse... There should have been a revolt long ago.

They had legislative elections in December 2015 and commies are minority now. National Assembly wants to take Maduro down and they have the votes and popular support for it. That is why Maduro is pushing for emergency powers.

>>As if Obama would ever do anything to undermine a leftist government.

He’s probably responding to the rise of Trump. For the first time in decades, Marxists around the world will have a monster in their closet.

Kirchner indicted in Argentina, Roussef impeached in Brazil, Fidel announces he will die soon, Chavez is dead and Maduro is looking for a way to bail out and a safe place to land.

Meanwhile the US is focused on China in the Pacific, ISIS in the Mideast, Russia in the Trans Dniester and Baltic...

South America is every bit as unstable, any by virtue of proximity and US domestic po!itics, more likely to have a disproportionate impact on everyday American life.

——U.S. intelligence officials told reporters they were increasingly worried about the potential for an economic and political meltdown in Venezuela-—

Is the current situation not a de facto economic and political melt down already?

President Trump will quickly earn the goodwill of the Venezuelan people after airlifting 50 tons of toilet paper to them.

“State of emergency?”

Is that replacing the previous state of emergency? Or was that not a SERIOUS emergency?

“airlifting 50 tons of toilet paper to them.”

We should do this, snd them in via parachute. It would be amazingly inexpensive. I seriously doubt that the Venesuelan Air Force would be any threat. They probably have no fuel and their pilots are probably afraid to fly the few planes that have been glued together.

It might be so embarrassing to the government that it would probably be overthrown from within.

P.S. Perhaps the rolls could be printed with propaganda, like “Wipe Out Socialism”, “Clean up The Mess With Capitalism”, or perhaps government official’s faces printed on the paper itself.
