House Passes “Donald Trump Act” Which Punishes Sanctuary Cities for Not Following the Law

House Republicans passed legislation on Thursday that would deny federal funds to sanctuary cities.

The bill, passed 241-179, would withhold certain federal law enforcement grants to cities that have policies designed to shelter illegal immigrants from deportation.

Sanctuary cities have come under heavy scrutiny in the wake of Kathryn Steinle’s death on July 1 in San Francisco. Authorities charged Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez with her killing. Lopez-Sanchez, who is in the U.S. illegally, has a history of felony convictions and has been deported five times.

Critics of the sanctuary laws say such policies encourage people to immigrate to the U.S. illegally at the expense of citizens.

“A refuge for whom? A sanctuary for whom?” Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said. “A sanctuary for Kate Steinle? Or a refuge for a convicted felon with a 25-year-long criminal history?”

Democrats accused House Republicans of bringing up the bill in part because of real estate mogul and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s focus on illegal immigration and sanctuary cities; they dubbed the bill the “Donald Trump Act.”

“Just a few weeks into his campaign and Donald Trump has a bill on the floor of the House. That is better than some of the senators he’s running against.” Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said mockingly.

Republicans denied that Trump had any influence on their decision to bring up the legislation.

“This is a valid concern that we’re voting on today,” said Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.), who has often broken with his party on immigration in the past and said he finds Trump’s comments offensive. “I’m not going to let Donald Trump dictate my vote.”

I like it. Zero will veto it. Could be a cause to sue his Arse if any illegal harms a US citizen.

Close down Alcatraz to the tourists and put them there to fend for themselves. It’s cold and they can’t swim to shore.

That bill was introduced almost a year ago by Sessions with several co sponsors and they deserve the credit NOT Trump. Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions and several other Republican senators unveiled legislation Thursday to force “sanctuary cities” to cooperate more closely with federal officials on immigration.

Sessions, chairman of a Senate subcommittee on Immigration and National Interest, was joined by co-sponsors Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in introducing the bill, dubbed the Protecting American lives Act.

The bill would “require state and local jurisdictions to notify the federal government when a criminal alien is in their custody; it will withhold funds from any local jurisdiction that releases an alien after a federal detainer has been placed on them; and it will establish a 5-year minimum prison sentence for deported aliens who attempt to illegally re-enter the United States,” Sessions said in a statement.

The bill is a response to recent Republican and Democratic complaints to the decision of some cities not to cooperate with federal officials when it comes to detaining illegal immigrants. San Francisco, a sanctuary city, ignored federal requests to detain an illegal immigrant, or to at least inform the government if he were released, and that immigrant has been charged in the shooting death of Kate Steinle.

Excellent...While Obama will veto it, don’t be surprise if both houses overcome that veto. None of the Dems need Obama.

It's called leadership.

“... force “sanctuary cities” to cooperate more closely with federal officials on immigration.”
Big deal, the Fed isn’t enforcing immigration laws, either!

Don't be fooled. The Dems have labeled it as "The Donald Trump Act".

But it indeed is Trump that has given it the push it needs. Let's see what the Senate does and how soon it does it.

Yup, it’s primary season so time to pass conservative bills that will go nowhere, then brag about it back in the home district.

Sanctuary cities legislation goes back to 2007...maybe earlier. But nothing happened...(and with similar penalties)

A couple states have outlawed them.

Perry introduced legislation to outlaw them (in Texas) in 2011.

But Trump is indeed the catalyst to push this through.

“That bill was introduced almost a year ago by Sessions with several co sponsors and they deserve the credit NOT Trump.”

And you know that Trump had no influence in prompting them to draft this bill exactly how?

I can hardly wait for Donald to put a stop to many things such as this and things that are bankrupting America- such as handling out trillions to sh*thole countries who hate us.
America and Americans are suffering.
It time to put America first. Make America great= and respected again!

I hope they take away the funding from libtard Seattle to the south of me in Washington state. The mayor and the city council are total lefty weirdos. We have an avowed socialist Sawan Sawant - or some such name that I never can and never care to remember - on the city council.

She is from India, divorced from a Microsoft millionaire, so she has money and shoots off her mouth constantly.

About a month ago she was saying that if Trump had a rally in Seattle, “We will shut it down.”

So Trump had the rally two hours north of Seattle and it was Yuge.

So much BS. If it were not for Trump calling an end to sanctuary cities when he becomes President these sick ars holes would have never done nothing. Both parties are a crap heap of pure cow dung.

Trump for President.
