Mother lets son drive golf cart at resort, gets jailed for child abuse
The Charlotte Observer ^ | May 21, 2016 | Mark Washburn

On the second day of her dream vacation on exclusive Bald Head Island, Julie Mall went with her family to the beach to catch the sunset. Her 11-year-old son asked to drive the golf cart back to their $1,000-a-day rented cottage.

It was dusk, no traffic on the path and his father would sit next to him. A two-block, 30-second ride. She said sure. What could go wrong?

In the next four hours, Mall says she was pinned to the ground by police, repeatedly accused of being drunk, frogmarched barefoot aboard a ferry in handcuffs, jailed in leg irons and charged with child abuse.

Why is this any surprise with the maniac liberal country we now live in? Talk to your grand parents to see how great we were back in their day - none of this current stupidity.

What a complete nightmare for the whole family. That resort should know it is in their best interests to resolve this case asap to the family’s satisfaction. You don’t want people thinking your resort is guarded by TSA level cops who overeact to this extent. Her husband should never have left her alone with those cops, but most law-abiding people don’t think defensively, until something this preposterous happens to them. They haven’t found the right lawyer yet, keep looking.

Just when I thought NC might have been a nice place to visit. Well I doubt I will ever visit that hellhole now.

"Oh my! So glad we got to drive golf carts with daddy as kids."

Hell, I was driving a John Deere tractor at 10.

Something very similar happened to a relative of mine. He was arrested completely without cause and then the cop didn’t show up in court to back up what he did - claiming a flat tire.

The City should have been sued for false arrest. Apparently this wasn’t the first time that cop went beserk.

She apparently never resisted arrest, but was knocked to the ground and beaten by a stupid cop who forgot his citation book back at the office.

Our society has become WAY too legalistic. Everyone is presumed to be guilty and has to prove they’re innocent despite what they say.

FTA: He said in his report he approached the cart, identified himself and began talking to the Malls.“I immediately observed both to be intoxicated.
Maybe the officer should've done a field sobriety test at that point, if he had reason to believe they were "blitzed"? I would think, if they were indeed sober, since no one was injured and no property damage done a warning to the parents, or a most issuing a citation would've been appropriate.

I used to let my kids drive earth movers and buckets when they were 11 or so (a couple dozen yards or so), and let them move the bucket up and down and break earth and concrete

I’d probably be doing hard time now

My sister and I were driving golf carts when we were maybe 12 years old with our parents nearby. We loved it!

Well then I guess next up is getting the bicycle and tricycle regulatiosn and permits in order .../s Seriously It's hard to drive a golf cart wrong. Most kids can drive them by the time they're 9 or 10 no problem. I see no problem with a kid drive them on private property or an enclosed community.

Letting an 11-year old drive a golf cart (which I did plenty of times at that age) on a golf cart path = child abuse.

Giving an 11-year old a sex change operation because he or she “identifies” with the opposite sex = loving, caring, enlightened parents.

Our nation and culture is circling the drain...

Hell, I was driving a John Deere tractor at 10.

I drove my dad's 1949 Ford stick shift pickup at ten while we were loading concrete blocks for building garages. Today's kids would freak out over a stick shift {fuggetabout working 12 hour days for a buck}.
