91.8% of the people arrested for marijuana possession and sale in the city of New York between January and March 2016 were people of color, according to statistics from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services obtained by the Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP).
PROP also found that 86.5% of New York Police Department (NYPD) misdemeanor arrests involved people of color, up 2% from 2015.
Arrests for "small amounts" of marijuana were up a whopping 33.7% from last year.
Robert Gangi, PROP's director, said in a press release that the statistics show that NYPD arrest practices are marked by "waste and racial bias," and a clear indication that, despite the rhetoric in City Hall, marijuana infractions remain a major focus of the police.
"While Mayor de Blasio, NYPD Commissioner Bratton, and other city officials have made widely publicized pronouncements about reducing punitive sanctions for marijuana infractions, the data present a different story. Arrests for these activities are actually on the rise," Gangi said.
The NYPD was not immediately available for comment.

That’s surprising. If this is true (and at the risk of being flamed) this may be evidence of racism. I think its a valid point that white kids in the suburbs get a pass on smoking pot — the police don’t arrest them and judges give them a slap on the wrist if they are arrested— while inner city blacks get busted for it.
This “people of color” descriptive drives me NUTS !!!!!

Cops tend to patrol in area which have a lot of crime of every kind. Needless to say, they are more likely to make arrests for any crime in the areas which patrol.
That is the reason for any perceived disparity.
I think it is more of an income scale than straight racism. Poor people of any color will always get the full measure of the law, while wealthy people of any color will always get a full measure of ‘understanding.’ A poor black kid with some joints or a poor white kid with a couple tablets of ecstasy will be pounded by the law (and not only get real jail time, by get arrested hard). A rich black kid with heroin or a rich white kid with cocaine will almost always get away with some community service.

All it means is that “people of color” are too stupid to keep a low profile in order to not get caught.
Agreed. Probably more of an issue that rich parents — white or black — get their kids off easy for drug charges while poor kids get busted.
I doubt it.
A higher percentage of blacks are in situations involving law enforcement that have nothing on the surface to do with drugs, and in the course of enforcement, drugs are found.
That is my guess.

I agree. Its not like white kids don’t smoke pot. I guess the police don’t hang out in the college scene.
I’m more outraged because it is a waste of our tax dollars to arrest people for smoking a damn plant and eating too many chips!
Putting these people in jail cost more than the damn weed!
Or could it be that the people of color are more likely to commit other crimes and to also be charged with possession of marijuana incidentally?

I assume you're being sarcastic. I'm from the north and grew up among rabid racists. For many years Indiana held the largest chapter of the KKK in the world. Even electing state politicians.
And the worst riots because of bussing back in the 70s that I can remember were in Louisville, KY, and Boston, MA.

Most Marijuana arrests occur during the course of an arrest for a much more serious crime. They get arrested for the serious crime then police find the pot on them before they are transported to lockup.

Maybe the non-black potheads in NYC are smart enough not to smoke or “open carry” when the fuzz are around, not make trouble, or even be around trouble that’s likely to bring the LEOs when in possession, or, look guilty like you dindunutin’?
