Duuuude!
Dudess! ;-)
Were off to the races with the violin taking the lead, then the piano, first in F minor, then in A-flat. Development commences almost immediately, and its a clever mix of both subjects, finishing with a little fugue. It drops into the recap in the middle of the first subject, and the second subject is in F Major, as you would expect. He rushes to the finish line in F minor.
A few years ago, I saw this piece performed at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival with James Ehnes on violin. After the concert, I went backstage and said, James, you guys looked like you were having an awful lot of fun in the finale. He said that the finale was a romp and that the musicians were enjoying themselves. Well, we cant have that, you know, I said in my best haughty manner. I got everyone to laugh.
Lots more good wallerin’ stuff tonight, Mr. P! Thanks for your hard work!
(MUMBLE MUMBLE BLUSH BLUSH)
The first subject of this movement in sonata format has a hint of Beethoven behind it. Once again, Felix uses a minor key to unleash raw power in a rolling 6/8. The second subject is in D Major, as expected, and it brings a moment of calmness and beauty to the mix.
Development starts in C Major and works its way through the sharp keys. It winds down quietly for the recap.
The second subject in the recap turns to B Major, the correct key.
The coda works its way from the major back to B minor for a race to the finish line.
“We can’t have THAT, you know”
hahahahaha...good one!
You sure work WAY harder than I do to put together a program! I know everyone enjoys it....reading the background material is just a part and really brings those ol’ guys alive again. :)
The slow movement in E Major is another one of Felix songs without words. The central panel turns to B Major before returning to the tonic key.
